Mahahual lodging
Where have you stayed in the Mahahual to Xcalak area?
We are looking at spending a few days down there in a couple of months and are looking for reports, experiences, etc. We have heard about the 40 Cannons place, but not so much about other places thanks Ron |

I recommend Nacional Beach Club. Lovely young couple run it, Ana and Evan. Has rustic bungalows and also regular hotel rooms, beachfront, cute little bar/restaurant, small pool. I've got an article in the hopper about them, hopefully will be able to put it up soon.
Here's their facebook page. |

The owner is a lovely woman named Ginny who is a large part of helping the Vidas Spay/neuter clinic in Bacalar. She's got three adorable dogs who hung out with us on the dock all day. We went to visit Hotel Laguna Bacalar, the place that had so charmed me on my first Bacalar trip. It's changed hands since then and it looked a little rough around the edges, though still kitschy and cool. The rates have gone up (of course), but I'm sure for a night or two it would be perfect. |

Pehaltun looks pretty cool, Heather. We'll be looking at lodging options ourselves in Mahahual or thereabouts again in December for a few nights. Last year we loved staying at 40 Canones. This year, aside from Mahahual, we may possibly want to spend a night in Bacalar or Xcalak as well.

If you don't need to stay in town and have a car - Mayan Beach Garden is very nice. Its about 20 km north (12 miles). If you are a nature lover -its perfect - if you like the night life -you might be a bit far out. Depends on what you want. The beach is very nice there - lots of sand and good snorkeling.

We looked into Mayan Gardens last year and while it did look nice, we chose to stay in town at 40 Canones and were glad we did. Not sure yet if we'll try another hotel or not this year- we loved our room there. And we'll definitely go back to Jaime's place!

We stayed here in july...the photos online make it look much better than it actually is. It does have a great view...apparently it is slightly higher up so you can see right down the lake which was gorgeous. Other than that it was disappointing...the rooms are not great...v simple, sort of clean, rusty fans, no a/c (all ac rooms were taken- but really I think they must only have maybe 2 rooms with ac!) and the slowest toilets around and a crappy pool bar - basically beer was the only option. The windows are the old slat style...so you have to have them open to get air. A storm blew in on our first night so then you had to close the windows (eek) or get wet and we woke up to rain next day. Nowhere to go there in the rain....and you don't want to really hang out in your room! The pool is refilled every few days with lake water...kids did have fun in that, but no boat trip for us and we decided to head home ![]() We did have a lovely meal at Los Aluxes down the rd...and it looked like they had rooms...and a much nicer establishment so we took their card for another time! |
