Costa Rica, July 28 - August 5, 2011

Finally after waiting almost two years, we were going to Costa Rica! I was excited about finally getting a new country stamp on my passport. After almost 5 pages of Mexico stamps, I was getting a different one.... hopefully this is the start of something wonderful!

Ok, I must warn you, I tend to babble a little too much, so please forgive me in advance.

Today was our flight day. We arrived at LAX around 7:00 a.m. It was pretty busy, but we managed to get through pretty quick so we had time to go to Cinnabon and pick up some rolls and some sandwiches for the flight to Houston. We arrived in Houston about 15 minutes early. But unfortunately, our connecting flight was delayed because of a storm in the area. We finally left around 6:45 and arrived in Costa Rica around 9:30, 2 hours behind schedule. Luckily we had called Avis while in Houston because the office closes at 6:00-6:30.
Liberia airport is interesting. It looks like a hangar type building (all metal) and there is this huge ceiling fan that looks like a giant propeller. It was awesome, it was turning pretty slow, but man did that thing have power! I wanted to take a picture of it, but was afraid I would get in trouble. We were the last ones to get through immigration. Our bags were waiting for us by the time we got through. There is no conveyer belt for your bags. I didn’t see how they brought them in, but they looked to have been placed by the wall in a neat little row. We walked outside and quickly found our Avis driver. Boy was I glad to see him! He drove us to the Avis office where we picked up a small Nissan SUV. It was very roomy, we were very happy with the car. They do tell you that you have to buy the collision insurance, because it is required by the government. We had purchased it online, so there were no additional charges and we were not hassled about buying anything extra. The car cost us about $346.00 for the week with all the taxes and insurance fees paid.
We left Avis around 10:20 and made our way towards Flamingo Beach. It was very dark on the road, except when you would come up to a little town, where you would get a little bit more light, but not much. The sky looked gorgeous, it was so full of stars… but unfortunately, there was not much time to sit and stargaze. We had about an hour drive before we got to our destination. We finally arrived around 11:15 – 11:20 and checked in. We had a little bit of complication with the room keys. For some reason we could not get our unit opened, so they ended up giving us two single rooms for the night until the technician came the next day to fix our room door. It was a very long day and we were glad to finally get some sleep.
Ok, lets see if I can post these pictures.

More please!

As an FYI...Jet Blue will start flying non stop, JFK to LIR airport (Liberia) on Nov 17th, 4 days per week. I just booked someone for mid December and the airfare was $254/pp round trip - with taxes!

ooooo, If only they would do a non-stop from MSP... (Minneapolis)
under $300, now that's a great deal, I think last Feb. I paid over $500. and that's with a stop in Atlanta.

Note to selves: if you have to make a connection, I think you should have at least 2 hours between flights. I got stuck over night on the way down and missed my return home in Atlanta by mere minutes, had to wait another hour for the next flight. That's not so bad, but at midnight, it kind of is.

Can't wait to return.

Our tickets from LAX to Liberia cost us $954.00! With a layover in Houston.

I'm waiting on my daughter to give me her media card from her camera to get her pictures and then I can post more. I know I took pictures of the room, and I can't find them.

I will be doing the next installment soon.

Yeah he did... by that time it was around midnight there and we were all very TIRED. I was happy when they finally gave up and gave us two small rooms for the night and told us they would fix the door issue in the morning.

Ok, lets try this again! I just posted all these pictures and then I lost them!!

Saturday, July 30, 2011
Today we were a little late getting up, we were pretty tired after yesterday’s long travel day. It took, us a little while to get ready. Four people trying to use one bathroom was going to get old pretty quick. After exchanging our room, we went to breakfast at the hotel. Unfortunately, they stop doing the breakfast buffet at 10:30. We got there at 10:05…. I was ready to grab two plates and pile it on. Well it turns out I did not have to. The selection was so small. They had pancakes, rice with black beans, eggs, French toast, bacon, some fruit, yogurt, granola, some cereal and that’s about it! I was even more shocked when we got the bill. $55.00 for 4 buffets YIKES that was the only time we had breakfast at the hotel.
After breakfast we went back to the room and we decided to stay around the hotel and lay out by the pool and go to the beach. It was a little overcast, but it was still a little on the hot side. It was a great relaxing day.
We decided to go to an early dinner (at least for us, it was early). We asked at the front desk for places close by the hotel and were recommended a place called Pura Vitali which was like a 3-5 minute drive down the road. We arrived and they were waiting for us. The hotel had graciously called ahead for us. Michael and Susy ordered the Shrimp, it was around 5-6 jumbo shrimps wrapped in bacon in some white cream sauce with vegetables and French fries for Susy and Salad for Michael. Vicky ordered the chicken plate. I think her plate was the best! It was a grilled chicken breast with white rice, black beans, potatoes and a salad. I had Arroz con Pollo with a salad. Michael tried Imperial beer and he loved it, he had two beers. I tried a mango margarita which was pretty good, I ended up having two margaritas. The girls had Sprites. After dinner, they brought me a Limoncello, which the waiter said was an after dinner drink. OMG that thing was so strong!! I told Susy that if she lit a match and I blew it out, it would turn into a blow torch! It took me forever to finish it, it was so strong! Our total bill came out to $117.00 OMG what the heck… it sure is pretty expensive to eat around here!!!
After dinner we stopped off at the local market. Michael picked up a six pack of Imperial for the room, we picked up snacks and drinks for the room and for our outings. The total was $26.00… much better!
When we got back to the hotel, the girls went back into the pool for a little bit then we went to the family activity center and played ping pong, then went back watched TV for a bit then finally went to bed around 12:00. A great first full day in this wonderful place had come to an end.

Ok, hopefully these pictures post this time.
