Viva Wyndham's - Maya or Azteca

They both seem to be about the same from I can gather from the internet. Any insight or experiences?

WE stayed at the Azteca. Chose that because I had heard it was a little smaller and quieter. Thought the food was pretty good. Nice pool with bar and snacks close by. I believe if you are booked at one you are able to us the facilities at either. We never did get around to checking out the Maya. We had a nice ground floor room with a walk out patio.

We were pretty close to the bar and it did get a bit noisy on a couple nights.
Only thing I would do differently is to ask to be a little further fro the lobby bar.

The Maya is the more active of the two, it's bigger (480 rooms) vs. the Azteca (270 rooms). I usually recommend the Maya to families, because that's where most of the activities go on but you'll also see families at the Azteca. If you stay at the Azteca, you can go to the Maya. It used to be that the Maya folks couldn't go to the Azteca and I'm not sure if they can use ALL of the Azteca facilities all the time but - they can make reservations at two of the Azteca a la carte restaurants. Just not sure if you can hang out there all day. Maybe someone who has stayed at the Maya will chime in.

I had some clients at the Azteca who sent me back a nice report, in case you want to get their take on it:

We had a very nice trip and liked the Azteca. It is not the sort of place that would appeal to someone wanting all the bell & whistles of a jumbo resort, but we like the smaller places. Room was average size and a bit worn, but the cleaning staff kept it spotless. Grounds were well maintained and the beach was great – wide expanse of sand and plenty of seating under palapas and palms. Mostly families with kids while we were there, and we were about the only Americans (which we like, otherwise we might as well vacation in Florida). The anamacion workers on the beach were fun.

As buffet food goes, the Azteca’s was the best we’ve had so far. The Italian restaurant was great – our kids raved about it. The Mayan was interesting and the oriental was average – overall, though, the food was well prepared. The pool bar cranked out an endless supply of very good pizzas. The staff was super friendly – one of the beach animacion workers climbed a coconut tree and knocked several to the ground, opened them with a machete and gave everyone samples. We were too worn out at the end of the day to make any of the shows.

We walked down to the Maya a couple of times, but only got as far as the beach and pool area – they had a trapeze which my youngest son thought was a blast. After two sessions, they invited him back for a special session with a guy who would do a catch. I’ve attached a photo – the guys working the trapeze were great. Overall, we were glad we went with the smaller, less crowded Azteca over the Maya.

I think anyone who is budget-minded, does not mind a smaller resort, has reasonable expectations and is primarily going for the beach would be pleased with the Azteca.

I stayed at the Maya in the fall of 2009. It was modest and pleasant.

They had free use of bicycles for a jaunt to town. There was a small "takeone/leave one" library.

The grounds provide a pleasant late afternoon stroll when the odd little agoutes come out to forage. Think guinea pig on deer legs!

My sole complaint was that one day they fogged the grounds in the middle of the afternoon which had me fleeing to my room to avoid an overdose.

Viva Maya/Azteca

I completely agree with Mark711's description of Viva Maya's "small best western style rooms..." and to chime in with Shammy-- we were told we could use the pools at Azteca but could not eat or drink (except with dinner reservation in a la carte)... but Azteca guests could use both.
