Thailand-Three way islands
“If you don’t dive , you miss half the island”
I saw it written on a sign half buried on one of Koh Phangan’s white beaches as an advertisement of a dive center. I had seen it with my own eyes a few days earlier during that first snorkel trip in Krabi. I have realized it in various places I’ve snorkeled. If you don’t discover what lies under the warm tropical water of the islands , not only you miss the half , but probably the better half! Sitting on the top of the southern island that is also the view point of Koh Nangyuan I couldn’t decide which was the better half.. The one I was just facing? Or the one I had seen through my mask a few minutes ago? ![]() The view point is located on the island left of the wooden dock and going upstairs into the heat , under the burning sun is a bit tiring. I can’t complain , the weather was perfect during this daytrip from Koh Phangan! And despite the fact I had been here a few years ago , I was so impatient to experience the same daytrip that was imprinted in my mind as the highlight of my trip to Koh Samui. Then.. Then the stairs didn’t even exist and someone should climb from the front side of the island passing almost through the bungalows. Now there is a wooden dock that circles the island passing the visitors to the side that faces Koh Tao and then to the concrete steps. ![]() Despite the comforts provided nowdays to the few (strange if you think the crowds that flock the islands) that try to go up , even so the steps take half your breath away , exactly like then.. The other half of your breath is taken away when you face the view , exactly like then..

My first trip to the area was 10 years ago too! Of course Koh Nangyuan has changed but not too much. What has changed is definitely the crowds , but the islands are still very charming!
![]() Then we had arrived with a small speed boat from Samui island with other 5-6 people aboard , the boat stopped near the sandbar and we almost jumped into the water with shoes and bags over our heads. Now we were accompanied by almost 100 people on a big catamaran which approached the wooden docks and reloaded us near the restaurant’s area. There’s also an island to island zip line and the zip liners fly over the people lying on the sandbars soaking up the sun. ![]() ![]() If you are staying at the neighbouring Koh Tao , your best bet is to cross the 10 min. distance on a long tail boat , preferably early in the morning before the catamarans with the crowds arrive. So you can have this little paradise only for yourself for a little while.. This is the view point island seen from the beach: ![]() Staying here in one of the bungalows seems to be fine for 2-3 days! Although I don’t know how nice it’ll be to pay for your peace and quiet and everyday you have to share your island with tons of people. But waking up every day with this view through your window!! The islands are towering their tops in the sky and their white like powder bases to sink into the most clear turquoise waters I met during this trip. What else can anyone ask for? Maybe another dive! ![]()

Wow, how it has changed. We stayed in some small thatched bungalows to the left of the cove as you are facing the beach. Couldn't tell if there is anything there now? Of course there was only a small dock for landing of long tails........... hate the thought of hundreds of tourists invading those beautiful spaces, and all the noise! There wasn't even electricity on the beach in the past! Thanks again for sharing!

My video from Koh Nangyuan - Koh Phangan.
Koh Phangan is famous for the Full Moon Party which is held on full moon night every month. But it is also dotted with picturesque beaches and bays. Driving around the island you can continuesly stop and get out to enjoy the palmfringed shores providing peace and quiet: |

Thanks for sharing
I had the pleasure of going to Pattaya for vacation one Chinese New Year back when I was attending Hong Kong International School in 1973. It sure was beautiful. And ample opportunities for kids to push the boundries. I still look back on that trip today for another one of lifes little lessons.

I totally agree with you. What's under the surface is amazing around those islands. We spent about a month there in 2010. It was the first time for us and we were in awe of the beauty of the place. Here's to hoping we can get back there soon!
