Please help this dog!!!
Ok, we desperately need some help here - we were out on 5th, saw a dog that crossed the street back & forth a couple of times narrowly missing being hit by cars. She crossed by us again and so I called to her - she IMMEDIATELY came up to me and I saw she was so emaciated I couldn't believe she was still alive. Every bone in her back and pelvis were jutting out.
She is the most gorgeous dog - beagle / hound mix - and proceeded to lick my face and let me love on her while Russ walked about 10 blocks to go buy her some food. She stayed with me while I hugged her and petted her so she wouldn't run every time a car or noise startled her. She is SO LOVING I couldn't believe it. I started randomly asking people if they spoke English and finally this couple happened to stop and help me. They made several phone calls and directed us to someone that may be able to help (it's 9:30 on a Sunday night at this point). We started walking this dog with my purse strap around her neck, when all of the sudden the people pulled up and offered to take us to the place in the back of their pickup. Thank God they did, the place had recently moved and was quite a walk. We ended up at Playa Pets on 30th & 38th, we are paying them to board her (against their rules) until tomorrow and then we MUST go pick her up or she goes to the Perrera. The people we met are going to try to help us, but in the event they can't, we need help. She is completely tame and adoptable as is, she's just starving to death. Can anyone help her? |

First thing I would do is drop a pm to Andy (peanut pet shelter). If you need a dog in your life, they can care for it till you can adopt her and arrange transport to the states. That's the best alternative for her. If not, then drop a couple hundred (dollars) at the shelter, they always need cash, till she can be adopted locally.

The shelter is now called Playa Animal Rescue and is in a state of transition, so I'm not sure if they are able to take another dog. EDIT: I see that Funshine posted her request on the Playa Animal Rescue thread. |

Update!!!
Ok everyone, thank you so much for stepping up to help, thank you for the PM's, you guys are truly wonderful. I HAVE WONDERFUL NEWS!!!
This has all been amazing the way it all worked out. I really can't believe it. After calling a few places our new friend Antonio helped us with, we weren't having any luck. We reached Ricardo, and bless his heart he was willing to take her in as long as we could get her some basic vet services and take her to him. We walked to the vet and were going to ask them to start treating her and prepare to find a way to get her to Ricardo. We got to the vets office and Oscar the vet at Playa Pets informed us that a lady had actually come in and asked about this dog. HOW??? It turns out, this incredible lady had seen this dog around her area when walking her dog but was never able to get her. She wasn't sure this was something she could take on but like us, she was drawn to this dog and couldn't forget her. When she didn't see the dog today she was worried, and even though she rarely gets on the forum, she JUST HAPPENED to check here, saw my posts about the dog and said she thought to herself, "I wonder if that's my street dog". Since I posted the name of the vet, she went there to see. By the time we arrived, the vet told us she had already paid for the testing & initial exam of the dog but was still not sure she could take her if she had serious health issues. It turns out that along with starving, she indeed has heartworm and erlichia. The vet called her and told her the news, told her about us and we all agreed to meet there at 1:30. We offered to help her with the vet costs if that would help any. She is an angel. She agreed to adopt this beautiful girl and give her a forever home and treat her until she is well again. I can't express to you what a miracle I feel like I was part of - how could we be so lucky to have been there at the right places and times, had the incredible fortune of meeting these people and finding this dog a forever home in this amount of time????????? I am truly grateful from the bottom of my heart for this great fortune. This is a VERY happy beginning for this dog, I couldn't be happier and I can't thank you all enough for caring. THANK YOU!!!!!

Thank you all for the loving comments, they really do mean so much to me. It reinforces my faith in humanity when I am teamed up with exceptional people like yourselves and the ones that touched our lives to save this dog - this was a team effort and that is SUCH a beautiful thing. I didn't do this alone by any means, but one person can start a chain reaction. I refused to leave her on the street.
I heard a few comments like, "you can't save them all', "be careful, you can spend your whole vacation doing this" and some others, not meant to be mean but just discouraged by the enormity of the problem, the lack of available resources and probably to help ease the pain of what they are seeing. This dog was not just a dog scavenging and getting by on the streets - she was starving to death and obviously not going to make it much longer. She was adoptable, loving, and save-able. JUST TRY. TRY HARD. Is saving her more important than my spending money and my vacation? YES. Honestly, this MADE my vacation. We got back to hotel last night and I cried for a long time because I was so relieved to have her off the streets and boarded, but also scared for what was next. I was able to take a picture of her today and I'll upload that when we get home this weekend. She is SO beautiful! She weighs 19 kg and should probably weigh double that. I also have the new mommy's email so we can keep in touch and I may even be able to see her again before we leave. I encourage anyone in need to take their pets to Playa Pets, the vet on 30th Ave Y 38th St. -Oscar, Diego & the other vets there are incredible and they are OPEN 24 HOURS!!! Also, even though at capacity, PAR and Tierra de Animales were willing to step up and help. Don't give up, these animals need us all! XOXOXOXO |

You did a wonderful and selfless thing, no matter what any of those "negative nellies" may have said, you didn't let that discourage you. She is a living breathing life just like any human and deserves to be helped in any way possible. I can't wait to see the pictures.

We are trying to see her again before we go back home and we will definitely be getting pictures and emails that I'll be able to share with you all showing her progress. Also, I want to mention in addition to PAR and Tierra de Animales' great work, that Coco's or Vidas had spayed this dog at some point and therefore between this wonderful woman stepping up and the spaying, THIS ALONE took many, many dogs off the streets. It really is one by one, every one of them counts!!! |

I was very touched and impressed that you stopped to help this poor
dog, as obviously most people walked on by and did nothing!.... What a lovely selfless thing to do bless you!.....and I am so glad there is a happy ending and this dog will have a loving home at last ...well done!

What an incredible story! This definitely brought a smile to my face. What a wonderful thing you did. You probably feel like a million bucks knowing the dog now has a forever home.....just because you cared!

![]() She is already doing wonderfully at her new home, she even has a sister to play with, a cat, and her mommy has LOTS of love and time to spend with her. I am overflowing with gratefulness (is that a word? ha!) for the kindness of strangers that I now consider my friends. When we get home we will be able to post some pictures. I look forward to getting updates and seeing her thrive in her new home! We are going to visit her tonight and take her on a walk with her mom!!! |
