Ron and Kathy's Yucatan Adventure: 2011 Version

Hi all,

As is my custom I am starting out pre-trip

We were last in the Yucatan last November. Since 2006 we have traveled down every other year. From 2003 to 2006 we were there four times.

This trip is the answer to Kathy's question, posed a few months ago: "What do you want to do for your 60th birthday?" I thought and thought over a few weeks. Party? Nope. Oregon coast? Nope. Nice dinner out? Nope. I came to realize that the truth of the matter was I wanted to go to the Yucatan. Kathy said that was fine, but for her 60th (in 3 years), she wanted Portugal, Spain and Italy. I'm saving

Next step in my process is to book the flights. We had a bunch of Continental frequent flyer miles, so I started looking. Turns out we could pay full fare on the way down (plus a bit to get extra leg room), and could fly back first class on the mileage program. I am digging it - we have flown first class before, back in 2008 when both of us had done some extra consulting work. I love first class

So, red-eye to Houston from Portland, arrive in Cancun at 11:15 and there is an ADO bus from the airport to Merida at 1:30. Plenty of time for immigration, customs, and lunch with a drink or two.

In Merida we will stay at the old reliable Luz en Yucatan

That is enough for the opening episode. The only thing else I can say is that we have more activities planned on this trip than on prior ones.

Definitely waiting for this one! We are planning a few days in Valladolid and Merida after a week in Playa in May. And Luz en Yucatan came highly recommended.

Can't wait to read more!

Planned Merida activities include a gallery opening on Friday, at the Soho Galleries, a Saturday dinner with friends followed by the International Women's Club Halloween party. Here is a description of that:

Quote:
International Women’s Club Halloween Party: Sunday October 30
Prizes, Botanas, Cash bar, and Dancing to Classic Rock ‘n Roll by Deejay Vic Jorgensen. This is going to be a great party. Its been a long time since we had fun with a costume party. Be sure and bring your cameras! Costumes encouraged – Fun mandatory!
We have a couple of days that are partly open. One is Sunday, Oct. 30 when we will again enjoy Domingo en Merida. Monday evening there should be plenty of the Maya Day of the Dead (Hanal Pixan) temples in several parts of the city, including within a block of our hotel.

Tuesday morning we'll take the bus to Playa.

Also have the weather watch on for two systems

Invest 96 looks like it has a relatively low probability of affecting us greatly, but Dr. Jeff Masters does view the probability of heavy rain for the Yucatan Peninsula.

Quote:
Steering currents favor a motion to the west-northwest or northwest, and it is likely that heavy rains from 96L will spread over Belize by Tuesday night, when the storm will probably be called Tropical Storm Rina. Heavy rains from the storm will spread over Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, including Cozumel and Cancun, by Wednesday afternoon. On Wednesday, 96L will be encountering a dry airmass with high wind shear that lies over the extreme northwestern Caribbean. Since 96L is a small storm, these hostile conditions should cause the storm to weaken significantly before any potential landfall occurs.
Invest 97 is too far away to make any accurate predictions, but it bears watching.

Everything is packed Airporter arrives in 2 hours to pick us up.

Changed the flight from Cancun to Merida due to Tropical Storm Rina.

Taking the camera, and Kathy has a new iPhone with its 8 megapixel camera and video camera. Have the camera connect kit for the iPad. Will not post anything directly here, but may email a photo or three to the W's that they can post if the want to.

Just did the at home suitcase weigh-in. The new larger one weighs 47 pounds on our scale. No surcharge

Tonight in Merida, November 1 we arrive in Playa. We are ready for the trip!!

You will be fine in the airport, it only gets scary once you step outside the airport
