what food to buy

This will be my first hurricane-think I will head to the store in the morning to stock up on food. Any suggestions besides tuna. That seems to be the staple of our mexican friends that have been through a hurricane. I have down crackers -soda and ritz-cheese whiz-peanut butter and jelly, cookies. Need more ideas here. I am hoping this doesnt happen but will be prepared!

After the storm, we typically have the ability to heat water and cook even if we have no electric, so you might consider the Cup O Noodle soups and canned soup, easy things to heat up.

Anybody have any tips for what life at an AI is like during a storm of this (potential) magnitude?

When I was in the military in the south pacific I always had a half gallon bottle of rum in my locker, called it a typhoon fifth. Just a thought! I guess in Mexico it should be tequila.

Probably wet and windy.
Maybe no electricity.
Probably grumpy.
If it gets real bad they may move you, but I don't see it getting that bad.

forget categories. a big storm is a big storm. a category 1/tropical storm knocked the hell out of ny, nj and beyond (especially inland upstate ny) end of august.
you may have gotten by w/a cat 4 to your south in the past (a direct straight line), but with any massive amount of water/wind coming your way especially in the circular motion it is coming from directly to the playa area - meaning in a circular motion cozumel might not be a big help..., hope you take precautions and heed warnings. not a time to be macho.

will be thinking about pdc and hoping all stay safe.

I feel anxious, curious, inconvenienced and excited all at the same time. I've never been anywhere near a hurricane.

This ought to help clarify your feelings a bit- see 1st pic:

LOL

I'm with ya!

Doubt an AI is going to move anybody, really. I think as a practical matter, most of them tend to purposely take steps to build structures and get them approved by the authorities as hurricane shelters precisely because moving so many guests would be such a nightmare, logistically.

That is, move guests to another property. You might well be moved to another building at the same property.

The 11 pm EDT update is out and suggests contact with Playa a bit earlier, perhaps Thursday afternoon or so. Still shows it as non-major at that time.

As if on cue, I just read this comment on another forum:

Quote:
Right now, it is a really nice warm evening, stars are shining bright. The staff at the VIM are preparing for the worst but hoping for the best. We have an ocean front emerald suite, lower floor, but are moving tomorrow to a silver suite a little further back from the ocean.
I'm guessing that's pretty typical in these situations. Shammy might have some good experience on that point to report.
