What I'm visualizing is a rope hanging over a pulley, with a weight at the end of the rope on one side, and a monkey hanging on the end of the rope on the other side. If the monkey climbs the rope, but leaves the rope hanging below him as he climbs, then the weight of the monkey and the rope would still be the same on that side, so the weight and rope on the other side would not need to adjust. Once the monkey reaches the top, there would only be the weight of the rope left on that side, so the weight on the non-monkey side would then fall, or rather, pull the rope down over to its side.
So what's the component I'm missing to get the weight to rise?
