you may need to find a good trainer..and yes..get a good size crate.

When i use to take Sammy to training class, the owners of Jack Russells, even a mixed one, had a hell of a time controlling them to follow commands.
ftr, rita did feed me well

buttinski here...
sounds like eddie the wonder dog suffers from severe separation anxiety and thats why you cant leave him alone in the house untied.
theres many ways to deal with it.
one interesting method (which i havent tried with my pooch) is to buy them a snug wrap kind of vest. supposed really helps with anxiety and calms them right down.
rocket the wonder dog, when i first got him from the rescue, was a total hurricane in the house when i would leave. i dont think i have any books, cd's, movies, sunglasses, etc from those early rocket years. you shoulda seen what he did with the toilet paper....looked like it snowed in the house.
anyway...just a thought...

A friend of ours has Jack Russels, they seem to be VERY attached to their owner and suffer from seperation anxiety. Haha, we use to call the first one he had "Rubber Dog". Any way, the young ones seem to do well in a kennel or crate when he isn't home (in the house). I hate leaving dogs out side to have to deal with what ever comes along. It's cruel IMHO, they can't get away from the agrivations that present themselves. How about trying to contain them in an area with a baby gate or something?

i know about crates, i just don't think it would be right for this dog
My husband trains dogs and he says that if a dog can't behave outside of his crate when the owner isn't home, then they haven't earned the priviledge of roaming free. Dogs crave structure just like children and a crate can be a safe place (Home) for a dog and give them structure. As long as he's walked daily, I wouldn't feel too bad about crating him. Dogs can also strangle themselves being tied up.

Since you just got him he probably doesn't think your coming back when you leave. Leave him in the house for short periods of time till he gets use to you coming back. Get him some big chew toys to keep him busy while your gone. We have a Jack Russel too and they are a very energetic dog but very smart too.

One of my 11 year old dogs was crate trained as a puppy, then for years did not use the crate until she decided she wanted to be the alpha in the house (and fight with the real alpha dog!). So for the last 4 or so years she is in the crate again when I am not home. She loves her crate, it is her safe place! I do not think dogs are too old to be crated even if they are not used to it. It takes time but can be done!

One of my good friends kept her dog tied up outside when she went out. Came home one day and he had run around a tree and strangled himself. Her daughter was the unfortunate one to find him, it was very difficult for her to get over it too. I personally couldn't leave a dog tied up outside. There are worse fates than being crated and as others have said, many dogs think of a crate as their safe place, as home, as long as they're properly trained to use it.

Get a martingale collar, typically used on greyhounds and other dogs where their neck and head are the same size. Google them, figure put what size and ask someone coming dowon soon to place the order and bring it. I know that you can order one through Central Illinois Sheltie Rescues website. Let me know if I can help but we won't be back until aug, 2012.

I just realized that he is tied outside? If so, the martingale collar is a very bad idea. In fact, tieing a dog outside is generally a bad idea for a variety of reasons. Can you crate him inside when you're out? If not, can you acquire a dog run for him?

Hey Sammy ...

Try this link: Web Master

I know someone who had the SAME PROBLEM and this worked perfectly. Dog was a sheppard mix who was too smart for his own good. He broke a tooth trying to escape his crate so that did not work. Not only did he get out of a regular harness, but also escaped a fully fenced yard.

So he was safely tied out with the above harness during the day within reach of his dog house, food and water. They also had to use vinyl covered metal cable to tie him out as he chewed through rope too. Metal cable makes it harder for the dog to entangle itself, but Shammy is so right ... make sure there are no trees, shrubs, fences, posts ... anything ... he can get caught up on. Once that happens he will stuggle to get free and hurt himself ... or much much worse. He should be able to get to his dog house and go inside it ... but not around it.

If he has to be outside, a run is safest but expesnive.

hi mari, long time no talkie
so far no solution, but he has not esscaped for a few days

i am thinking about all the input
when the real "reja" goes up, i am thinking i can keep him in the yard if my neighbors keep the back door closed
i may have to put up a screen door with a spring to keep it closed

we will have to keep garbage out of his reach, of course, but those kinds of things are minor details

this little guy knows when he does something "wrong" but he can't help himself
i really don't want to squelch him, i just want to contain him when i am not able to bring him with me
