"Fanny Bag"/"Hip bag" etc

We leave in about a week so you can imagine, I am deep into the preparation stages.
I did a search but with so many hits....and I get side-tracked easy.....lots of great reports BTW!!
What do you guys think of the "Fanny Bay/Hip bag"?? The kind you wear around your belt-line. Are people using them in the Mayan Riviera?
What would you put in there? I mean, do you leave the passport and tickets in the room safe? (we are staying in an AI). Correct me if I am wrong, on a typical daytrip I would bring: some cash, bank card, Visa card, drivers licence, photo copy of passport.
Is this enough or is the passport required as ID if asked by the police etc?

Insites into this topic are appreciated.
Thanks in advance

what I do

I leave my passport in the hotel safe. Requirement or not, it’s not traveling with me every day. I also leave a back up credit card and some cash in the safe also.

I have a small fanny pack that also holds some water bottles. I’ll sling that across my shoulder and that way I can carry a camera and all of the stuff you have mentioned along with the water and sunscreen. (I don’t take my drivers license unless I am driving). If I want to bring more stuff (e.g folding snorkel and a mask) then I take a small backpack. Or and this is most of the time these days I cram everything in my pockets and carry a camera only.

And I try not to interact with the police. I have had to show my drivers license when driving a car. But I would never allow them to take it from me no matter what the story is.

I do always try to meet some cool people from............

ok I'm overdoing that last part.

Thanks Michealholmes!
I think for the plane ride the fanny pack rules. I will go with your advice about the small back back for day trip "stuff" and the remainder (a little cash) I will put in my pocket.
Say Micheal, will you be in Playa during March??

Cool people

Electra,

Unfortunately I will not get Playa in March. Rosa will be at Villa Flamboyan from March 13 through March 21st. She then moves into a hotel for the rest of the GgW PdC trip (Inappropriately miss-named by Tyra).

I don’t get to visit until April.

If you are in Playa when Rosa and Squish are there (in the first half of March) you should meet up with them. I had read that Squish will be not be involved in any wild partying when she is visiting (I am still awaiting a legal contract certifying the aforementioned good behavior). But you never know, she may make an exception just for one night.

- Mike.

If it doesnt fit in my pocket it doesnt come with me. Unless its a necessity for the days activities and then it goes in a small daypack. Those are my rules of thumb.

Ditto. They travel quickest who travel lightest. Having said that, I have the luxury of a wife who carries a rather large ¨purse¨ that provides a rather handy repository for extra stuff, but we do keep it to the barest minimum. Leave all important documents in the hotel lock box - and that definitely includes the passport and tickets. Take your bank card along, unless you´ve withdrawn enough cash to keep you going, but don´t carry more than you have to. Do see lots of those fanny packs around though. Michael is right on another point to, carry water and sunscreen. It´s heavier than you´d like, but you had better keep the fluid levels up, and coming from the middle of an Alberta winter, you´re a prime candidate for ¨well done¨.

If I bring a bag with all the essentials, what do I do with it when I want to jump in a cenote or something? Is there a problem leaving this kind of stuff on the beach or whatever, or do I have to keep my eyes glued to it at all times? :o
