Apparently I'm not as stressed as I used to be and only occasionally do the clenching thing... but on those mornings after, I often think I should get a new night guard...

Do the over the counter ones work, or does it need to be professionally fitted?
I have a professionally fitted one. Haven't tried the over the counter one. I don't like the slobber thing either. I don't see why there would be much of a difference between the one you get from your dentist and the over the counter one.
