Booked at The Real - should we upgrade?
Hi folks! We're booked for 1 week at The Real PDC and have seen on the website they may offer the option of an upgrade. We know that The Real is not 5 star, we booked it to keep costs down. But what would we gain from the upgrade (assuming they offered it to us)? Has anybody stayed at The Real? Did you take an upgrade? Was it worth it? Thanks! I appreciate any comments you may have.

Hi Shammy, it looks like they offer room upgrades.... I was wondering if anyone had taken the upgrade and knew what the positives were. We booked The Real Playa del Carmen to keep our trip under a budget, so couldn't consider upgrading to another resort completely. Their website said something about upgrades got you access to the facilities at their sister resort -The Gran Porto Real. I've sent the resort an email to ask them.

The Real has three room categories - Standard, Master one bedroom suite and Master one bedroom suite upgraded. Well, there's also a Family Master suite but that's not what you're looking for.
The Master one bedroom upgraded is the room category that allows full exchange priviliges with the Gran Porto Real - you can use all their restaurants and bars. Without that, you're limited to a small section of their beach and a beach bar for drinks. Here is the room description: All rooms include a living area and are Garden View. Guests staying in this room category has full exchange privilege use and enjoyment of all restaurants, bars, and facilities at the Gran Porto Real. You can also ask how much it is to upgrade to the Gran Porto, they allow those upgrades as well, as long as the Gran isn't full. |

Yeah, that's what we're interested in. We have two master bedroom suites booked. I emailed the resort, but they thought I wanted to change my reservation to stay at the Gran Porto instead. But they quoted me another US$660 per room to do so. I guess the upgrade will only be offered to us at check-in? You know of anyone who'd done it? |

We booked there too, for February 4-10th 2012. We took the (cheap room) we usually spend most of our time off the resorts anyways and are hoping the food is gonna be good enough. We usually stay down further (Bahia,Palladium) but are looking forward to being in the heart of 5th ave.We keep our days fun and full so we are not concerned about how big the room is or what it has in it,as long as it has a good bed, good bathroom and cold AC we are good to go...When reading the reviews keep in mind some people will complain about everything(rocks are hard, water is wet...boohoo),your down there to relax and have fun,so do it and come and go with a positive happy mood, it works for us. I had to laugh, one year I heard a couple complain their TV didn't work good, who the heck watches TV while on vacation in Mexico???Hope you guys have fun, I know we will....

LOL NorthernMN, sorry didn't mean to offend you
To be honest we turn the TV on for a few minutes ourselves, I still get the catchy Bahia Principe theme music stuck in my head when I hear the resort name lol , it was great to see which activities were offered at the resort for the day...

I doubt we'll watch any TV, but my kids might! My kids will be happy about the free wifi The Real PDC claims to have. Hope it does, or my kids will be bummed. I haven't surprised them with the trip yet.... soon!
We booked this resort to keep cost down and spend our money on dinners at the fantastic restaurants on 5th. As long as breakfast & lunch are decent! I guess the only thing to gain from the upgrade is a room on the first level?? |
