Yet another taxista story
Quote:
AAARRRGHHHHH - and then of course, hubby reminds me that we're only talking about less than 3 bucks difference, and I get it, and all... but STILL...it's annoying as ALL HELL. Glad we walk most everywhere else while we're here. |

I never ask any questions. I just get out of the cab, lean into the passenger window and pay the fare. I've never had any discussions with any cab driver. I guess he could stop his car get out and run after me. But that has never happened. No questions, no discussions, I just pay and walk.

Same shit happened when I came out of Coco Bongo and from Mega too when it was pouring rain. They're so dishonest. Also turned out Cannibal sold my CC info to someone, as my card was used to buy on their eBay, and was the only place I used it. Mexico ain't actually known to be the center of honesty in the World. |

I have to say that the same thing has happened to me coming from Mega. I didn't have the correct change so I gave the driver 100 Mx and he wanted to charge me 50. I told him that was too much but he was insistent. I wasn't going to argue. When you can just hand them what you know it should be, that's the best.
How ever, you can not judge them all for this kind of thing. I have had some of the NICEST cab drivers, they spoke English and were very nice. Too bad the ones who are not so nice make it bad for the ones who are nice. |

I took a taxi on Saturday from the sitio in Centro Maya (zone 19) to Zone 2 (50 pesos according to the excellent map posted at the start of this thread). I still always confirm the price before I get in and the driver got his laminated map/rate sheet out, confirmed the 50 pesos fare but added an extra 5 pesos because he was waiting at the "sitio", which I had no problem with.
It's a very true point that negative tales of taxi drivers overshadow the fact that there are some genuinely pleasant drivers out there too. I often wonder if this is driving more tourists to use the collectivo services to get around? |

Ya just gotta know the rules and how to play it. Know the fare and pay the fare. Don't ask. |

At both Walmart and Mega this past trip, we just walked out to the street and hailed a taxi instead of getting one from the taxis waiting at the exit... Therefore avoiding the "surcharge".
![]() We had great taxi experiences this past trip, only getting ripped off once in Tulum. I think. Got a taxi in Tulum pueblo and asked to go down the beach road to La Zebra; the guy charged $120 pesos which seemed awfully high. Coming back we walked up the beach to Cabanas Tulum and caught a cab there; he charged us $60 pesos.
