Rissask Report- Playa La Ropa, Zihuatanejo, Guerrero
I am going to make this short but sweet and mostly photos!
This was my fourth time to this area and Don's fifth. Obviously we love Zihuatanejo, and no wonder- what is not to love?? Perfect winter weather, guaranteed hot and sunny. Ever. Single. Day. Gorgeous sunsets. Jaw dropping mountain bay views. Bathtub warm and clear ocean water...and pools that are not going to freeze your nuts off (or whatever ). Calm beaches for swimming and some for boogie boarding. Great beaches and surprisingly good snorkeling (if you have only been to PV, the water is 100% nicer here!). Great restaurants in this town- and the BEST seafood- lots of it and it is very reasonable- other than the lobster and shrimp. Friendly, warm people everywhere, no timeshare sharks at all in Zihua- there are some at the airport, but they are not agressive at all, and quite a few in Ixtapa, another great reason to avoid Ixtapa, yuk yuk yuk ).Guerrero DOES have advisories at this time, there is quite a lot of cartel activity and a fairly high murder rate related to that. Acapulco is about 2-3 hours away, and that city now has the second highest homicide rate in Mexico, after Cuidad Juarez. Also, it has a long term (and well-deserved) rep for lawlessness in general and massive corruption- BUT it is just as safe FOR TOURISTS as any other resort area in Mexico. We felt VERY safe the entire time were there, and we walked all over downtown day and night. Our condo had 24 hour security guards, too. I was warned via PM from people on another website to not travel to certain other cities by car- Petatlan, Patzcuaro, and Morelia, which we were going to do- so we skipped that. But for a week there is PLENTY to see and do in Zihua- it is a city of 100,000, so pretty tough to get bored. Last edited by Rissask; 12-14-2011 at 01:31 PM.. |

This trip was one that was long overdue- we were taking my mom, Judy, as well as my stepdad Art.
About three years ago I had a 2 week trip to Playa planned for my mom and I...everything was booked and she was diagnosed with cancer. Since the trip fell smack in the middle of her chemo treatments, she had to cancel. But thankfully (knock on wood!) she is doing well again now and we were able to finally introduce her to Mexico. ![]() here they are at breakfast at the Calgary airport, nervous and excited....and a goofy pic of us-since when did Donnie get so GREY? ![]() ![]() ![]() I guess I should mention the dates....this trip was December 3 -10th. My grandma (mom's mom) is 90 now or we would have likely gone over Christmas, but we want to be home with her. Early December in this area is a great time to go, as the mountainsides are all still green and lush from the summer/early fall rainy season....later in winter they get grey and brown, not nearly as scenic. The condo we chose (through www.vrbo.com) is a 2 bedroom 2 bath unit called The Marlin House in the complex 'Casa Que Ve El Mar'. (house on the sea? House by the sea? something. )Marlin House - On Playa La Ropa in Zihuatanejo, Mexico It was just as gorgeous in person as in the photos! I took several pics of the condo-sorry for going overboard! But it was just so perfect. The two infinity pools were a great temp....just cool enough to be refreshing but warm enough to stay in for a long time and not be cold! My mom spent a LOT of time in the shaded parts of the pool during the hottest parts of the days....it was about 30C and sunny and clear every day. 86 F. Which to ME is about perfect, but to a redheaded freckled paleskin like my mom is 'horrendously hot'. She actually HATES extreme heat (this was 'extreme' -in her opinion) and will sleep with her window open in the middle of our winters- ice will actually FORM IN HER WATER GLASS....she is nuts! ![]() I actually thought after 2-3 days she would get acclimated....nope, she never did. ![]() The owner, Mike, picked us up free of charge at the airport (have I mentioned how much we LOVE staying in condos?) and we arrived to fresh flowers (lilies and gerberas) and a fridge stocked with a bottle of wine, 4 beer and 4 pop and some lime peanuts....AND a bottle of tequila! Have I mentioned how much I love staying in condos?? ![]() This pic was taken the NEXT day after we all piled in a taxi and went to the nearby Comercial Mexicana for supplies. We ate out most meals, but did have light breakfasts in the condo, and coffee, and some snacks and beer and pop for by the pool of course. ![]() anyway, here is the condo and pools and some of the sunsets. ![]() Mom with Mike, the owner, in the kitchen ![]() uh, WOW....open air living room ![]() The fruit bat machine that keeps the fruit bats OUT of the lovely open air living room... ![]() ![]() condo next door we almost rented ![]() Master bedroom balcony ![]() Don checking out the fishing boats in the bay with binocs they thoughtfully provided. ![]() I see you! ![]() view down from the balcony ![]() We got to sleep here since it was too hot at night for my mom...WOW again! ![]() She decided the temp was nice and cool in here- much better! ![]() ![]() I am loving this already!! ![]() of course after we unpacked the first thing we did was... ![]() The first of many....

Whoops! Will edit. FIVE for him. He went on that fishing trip with a buddy a couple years ago, too- down to Puerto Vicente de Guerrero, an hour south. That is the trip they saw the smoke from the police car the cartel torched on teh highway from out on the fishing boat, and the burned out hull of it the next day. So yeah, we weren't THAT upset about not leaving Zihua area.
