You are either older, wiser, or pacing yourself.
Certainly not wiser or pacing myself...just older and fatter.

In my defense, that was travel day so we were cashed...had it been a different day...I would have gone!

I am hopeful. More hopeful than I was for the 2011 meet, I never had a great feeling about that one and it did not pan out...

Day 2 – Saturday

As usual after a fun night on the town in Playa, I slept in. It was about 10AM, in fact, when I finally awoke from my slumber and sauntered out to the Mayan Bistro for breakfast with the others. If you are staying at the Aventura Mexicana, you get free rolls/coffee/juice at the Maya bistro, and hot breakfast is only about 60 pesos more.

Here are a couple pics of the Aventura Mexicana. Overall, it is great value for a somewhat boutique hotel in town. I think of it as a larger Luna Blue.

After breakfast, the lovelies went to Mamita’s while Ruso and I took a long walk down the beach (kind of romantic). What has happened to the beach as a result of the beach reclamation project is depressing. Not only has most of the beach been eroded, now there is a six foot cliff where there used to be a gradual sloping beach. On a moonless night, I could see someone getting hurt if they were going for a beach stroll and not paying full attention to their footing. The beach is good by Mamita’s and Kool as always, but until you get closer to Bad Boys, it is fairly small and has a large cliff. I am not exactly sure why a lot of other Peeps like places like Wicky’s and Zenzi and El Pirata as beach clubs. They seem very small now that the beach is eroded.

We swung by JJ’s new bar, the Wah Wah, and he gave us a very lengthy tour. I am in awe. It is huge, will have a great stage of TV setup, a great bar, great food, and plenty of seating. He plans to have live music from Thursday through Sunday and plans to be open all day (including dinner) everyday. He has a great elevated terrace where you can see not only the stage but also the sea. He really spent a lot of time with us and I really appreciated that. I can’t wait to go back when it is open.

We then walked up to my haircut place, on 15th between 2nd and 4th. It was 100 pesos for a haircut this time (keeps going up), but she spent probably 25 minutes on it. Ruso spent that time looking for (and ultimately finding and drinking) beer.

We then swung by PG’s Sandbox on our way back to Mamita’s and ordered a dozen fish and shrimp tacos to go. While waiting, we had to suck down a couple chopes (Corona’s tap beer) and visit with owners Chris and Carrie – always a good time.

The lovelies were famished by the time we returned and eagerly sucked down their share of tacos. While the BPM festival was at Kool, Mamita’s was still packed with a lot of good looking folks, but not so packed that we couldn’t find a comfortable space to lay out. But, the techno music was our undoing and we left somewhere around 3:30.

We just went back to the hotel and “napped” and then napped/relaxed until about 7PM, when we walked to Carboncito’s for dinner. The lovelies made Ruso and I wear our cleanest shirts so we figured we better take a pic.

We met John, Libby, their friend Dr. Jorge, his girlfriend Michelle, and another friend of theirs Steve at Carboncito’s. We ran into some other friends there and for the first time I met owner Russell.

We had plenty of the chips and pumpkin seed salsa, Cita had the wonderful shrimp brochette, TG had a salad with shrimp, and Ruso and I split a parillida (shared plate) for two. The food was excellent as always. Someone kept ordering buckets of beer, go figure. The service was surprisingly on the slower slide, but this was the first time we ever experienced that so we will certainly return.

Dr. Jorge bought a round of shots at the end of the night. Don Julio tequila with a lime juice chaser, followed by a sangrita chaser. Dee-lish-uss.

Dr. Jorge, “I have more chest hair than you, Ruso.”

Dr. Jorge, “This smells like crap. I think someone has gas” Ruso, “I can’t tell whether this smells more like gas, Modelo, or Tecate Light.”

JG, “I am certainly a stud, but 18 shots are enough, John. Don’t order me anymore. Plus, tequila gives me gas.”

Dr. Jorge and Ruso are both dentists. They really enjoyed hanging out and comparing dentistry in Mexico vs. the US. Every time I hear of a dentist being recommended on playa.info, it is Dr. Jorge. If you need dental services in Mexico, use him.
http://www.playadentist.com/. I am somewhat amused how his website says 24 hour emergencies. I would have liked to have seen Ruso and Jorge trying to numb a patient up after beers at Carboncitos and the Dirty Martini. Ruso, “That’s kind of odd, Dr. Jorge, in the U.S. we don’t give our patients Novocain in the ass.”

Dr. Jorge, “I think I am going to eat JG.” Russell in the background, “You guys can leave anytime now, you know.”

A cute picture of the two dentists. My favorite two dentists in the whole world. Ruso whitens his teeth, Dr. Jorge does not.

We walked down to the Dirty Martini and for the first time I met the owner Greco. I asked him what work he did for the bar, and I am pretty sure he said, “Quality control.”

Dr. Jorge grabbed the camera and decided there were way too many pics of dudes and that we better get some better looking stuff on film.
TG, “It’s about damn time, you gringo. Oh wait, I am the gringo. Okay, I’ll just smile”

Dr. Jorge, “Show me how you reacted the first time you saw JG in the buff.”

Laugh out loud if you think that Dr. Jorge’s butt is as hairy as his chest.

Libby, “I am not sure why John likes you guys. I better drink a lot so this evening won’t be as painful as it otherwise would be. And when I say painful, it isn’t because you guys are douche bags, it is because John stopped at the farmacia and picked up some of them little blue pills.”

Everyone, “Nice eyeliner, Cita.” Ruso, “Have another chocolate martini, Cita. Let’s all sing the beach boys song now…Good, good, good, chocolate libations.”

And what to my wondering eyes do appear, but Mayte Vargas! We love Mayte but wish that she would loosen up and have a drink once in awhile. She is so bashful.

Overall, we had a great time as always at the Dirty Martini. The beers are some of the warmest in Playa, but they are priced right (25 pesos), and the service is very friendly (and cute), the clientele is fun, and the chicks dig the martini list. And if the chicks are happy…Ruso and I are getting some BCWW.

Sometime around 11PM, we decided to walk up the Beer Bucket to hear Grabow. This is an in-action shot of us walking, scintillating, I know.

For the record, this is the first time I have ever enjoyed the Beer Bucket. Grabow belting it out with his friend from Canada.

JG, “Hmmmmm. What to drink?” Bartenders, “You really are a loser. Just shut up and order a shot.”

Jag Bombs! JG, “Mike, why are you scared?” Mike, “I heard you get amorous when you drink.”

JG, “I have gas, I’ll look at Mike to see if he smells it.” Mike, “JG has gas. Time to pinch my nose.”

Mike, “Bring on your amorousness, JG!”

Ruso, “I’m not so sure I am comfortable with you hugging Mike.” JG, “Don’t worry, Ruso, you will always be my man.”

I’m by myself. Must be more gas.

John and Libby, “We are from Chicago, which we understand is pretty close to Minneapolis. Next time we are in Chicago, we won’t look you guys up.”

Unless you have a sturdy bed in your guest room.

Okay, this pic is kind of hot. BCWW for mi amigo, John?!?!?!

Ladies and gentlemen…your 2010 winner’s of the Bomberos Three-Legged Race, and still course record holders…

JG, “I used to drink tequila like a man, now look at me.” John, “I have the biggest loser of a friend.”

Around midnight, TG was cashed and called it a night --- thus, no more pics as she wasn’t going to leave our asses with her camera. Somehow, she walked down the dangerous streets of Playa by herself without being shot, robbed, corrupted by police, overcharged by taxi drivers, or rained on. Grabow let his friend play until about 12:30AM and then played for an hour himself. His friend was very good, and as Mike would attest, a better musician than Mike, but again, I would have rather just heard Mr. Grabow play. Mike’s girlfriend Laura joined him on stage for a couple songs, and then I joined Mike for Wild Thing and Folsom Prison Blues. Starting at 1AM, Mike would say, “Okay, last song,” and then after that song would say, “Okay, just one more,” and he repeated that several times. He wrapped up his set with a very emotion packed version of Nothing Else Matters by Metallica. Even this country boy appreciated it. We made arrangements to fly Mike up to Minnesota for a summer party at Ruso and Cita’s house. Mike accepted on the condition that I would not attend or be within a 100 mile radius.

We finally left the bar around 2AM and wandered aimlessly trying to find food to no avail, except for a small convenience store. We were crashed out by about 2:30.

Great day/evening/night overall – probably more fun than the day before as we were more rested up.

That was our last late night, we start mellowing out big time coming up…

Nice trip report so far...

On night 1, I noticed your shirt picks up more stains (spills) as the night goes on. You don't even need timestamps to put the pictures in chronological order...just look at your shirt.

Mike played at Wicky's last year and my wife and I enjoyed listening to him...and will definitely track him down next visit wherever he's playing.

Looking forward to the rest of the report even if it's the tamer segment...

Great trip report so far JG (as always)!! Keep it coming. I'm living vicariously since my trip isn't until November.

And I agree about the breakfast at AM. Good deal.

I like it - the stain factor! I just wonder if it is stain or sweat...

Probably no nipples from me in this report...I'd have to show too much belly then.

Thank you as well --- it is fun when I get on a roll with the commentary, I usually just think of a theme and things start falling into place.

After I report about Tulum and show you pics...I think you will be more than considering it.

A raondom person happening upon this thread/comment would be really confused right about now. And that's okay.
