Working in Playa

Hi! Long time no post!

Last summer, my friend and I visited Playa, and recently started having homesick feelings of having not been there in what feels like forever. We are desperate to go back after reading through a lot of the recent trip reports

We were thinking that possibly next summer, the summer of 2013, we would try spending the entire summer in Playa. However, the cost of all the eating and drinking in Playa certainly adds up. Would it be possible for us to get any type of summer job in Playa-if we werent to be fluent in Spanish by then (we're on our way!) ? I have a degree in English Education and she's working on a degree in Photography if that helps, but honestly we'd be interested in any type of job that we could get some type of pay.

Would love to know if this is even a possibility- we're super excited at the thought of us spending the whole summer-so we hope that we could figure something out

It would be very difficult for a foreigner to find temporary work and almost impossible to find legal temporary work. If you did, you would find that a 6 day work week and extremely low pay would mean you would have very little time and money to enjoy the temporary residence in Playa.

Intending to move here permanently, I might be able to give different advice, but for the situation you describe, I would recommend working now where you live, living as frugally as you can and saving up as much money as possible, and coming down for a few months as a person of leisure. You can live here relatively cheaply for a few months if you're careful, especially in the summer.

Heather I hope those are not YOUR working conditions. Maybe we can get you unionized! <---- (Your union rep with contract)

Thanks, Heather! I kind of felt that might be the response- what would be your advice if we were to move permanently to Playa? And, what would be your advice for living there the whole summer cheaply-especially as far as where we could stay?

I talked to a girl from Canada today who works at one of the resorts doing activities and watching kids at the kids klub. She said she works 13 hours a day and only has 1 day off..she was spending the day with her parents who were visiting her. Not her "dream" job, but sticking it out because her boyfriend also works there. Not much time at all to enjoy "living in Mexico"

Typically..you can't work a job that a mexican citizen can do. And they will deport you if you are caught.
