Work in Playa and cost of living?

Hello, currently living in Mexico City (D.F.) with my partner, and we are going to have a child soon. Anyways, I can no longer stay in D.F. for a hand full of reasons (the contamination-dust has given me chronic health problems and there are simply too many people, along with no nature). I am 23, speak both English and Spanish, have American citizenship (although have lived in various countries) and am wondering what are the possible job opportunities in Playa del Carmen?

Also in terms of renting an apartment, food, necessities etc...what is the cost of living like?

Any help-advice is greatly appreciated. Also if not Playa del Carmen any other recommendations are appreciated as well.

(Also I play guitar, everything from classical to the blues....if that leaves any job opportunities open aswell)

Sent the PM.

Also, is everyone on this bord a ¨tourist¨ or do many people actually live there? Because I am curious as to the cost of living, and undoubtedly the cost of living is much more expensive in the touristy zones.

Like anywhere else, the cost of living in Playa varies according to your needs. Rent and utilities for a month can range from $5000 pesos and up, way up depending on what you want. Right now our rent, electric, cable, gas and water run right around $8000 pesos per month. You can find cheaper accomodations or much more expensive ones.

Alot of people who were once tourist now live here and some tourist live her for a few months out of the year.

I personally have never been to playa before moving here. We pay 6,000 a month for rent and that includes furniture 1 bedroom, water and gas. We pay about 200 pesos a month for electric in the summer. We use our neighbors internet and cable which saves alot of $$
On our roof we have our one section thats gated for us to hand wash our clothes and hang dry. We live in centro a few blocks from beach.

Cost of living really depends on which area you live. I live 10 minutes walking from 5th and pay 3500 pesos, this includes furniture, water, gas, internet and cable tv. Electricity is about 100 pesos per month. Groceries I would say around 1500 pesos per month, this can be less, but I want good coffee and nice bread Comparing friends I am a big spender.....You can live for the same price in a nicer and bigger place but further away. But keep in mind that wages are not much either. I work in on of the best paying hotels, good position and make around 11000 pesos netto per month.

Hmm in my opinion, having lived in-traveled much of méxico anything above 2,500 a month is rather expensive. I know quite a few people from farious states that pay 1,000 or less. I cannot imagine trying to work here and having to pay a rent around 5,000 pesos, that´s about what most people make in a month if not more. So I am sort of assuming also that most of the people on this board also don´t live too far from the touristy zone? Or that Playa is simply more expensive? Although it´s hard to imagine that all of Playa del Carmen is as such, being as there´s nearly 150,000 inhabitants.

1,1100 pesos...¿¿en serio?? That´s very good pay for here, if you don´t mind me asking what exactly is it that you do for the hotel, and how often do you work? (If that´s being too nosey you do not have to answer). Also, are you working with a FM3?

Also, are there many there who speak both spanish and english? Because I am wondering if being able to speak both is an advantage or not.

And in terms of getting work without an FM3, what are the odds of finding something that pays decent?

Then you can't.

I work at as a sales assistant. officially I work 6 days per week, normally it is 5 days per week. I know that I am very lucky And yes I do have an FM3, but at some point I have worked without FM3 as well because the company didnt do what was planned. Pay was the same.

As for speaking both English and Spanish, many people speak both eventhough there are many who have a very basic level of English. Speaking English and Spanish fluently would help. What type of job would you be looking for if you move to Playa?

Well that´s just it, I´m not sure exactly what type of job is available. I suppose I would prefer to give english-guitar lessons, but if that´s not really available and\or doesn´t ´pay at least decent than I am not sure. I´ve lived in-traveled 46 countries so I´ve learned to be rather resourceful in terms of work, but with a kid on the way I am a bit worried about it all now.
