Mattress shopping

So we really need a new mattress, the one we have now sucks It's only about 5 years old, but it's killing my back. The problem is I hate mattress shopping because it is so hard to tell how a mattress will be with a short "lay down". Our current one didn't start feeling bad, until about 6 months in. I'm pretty sure we're going to upgrade to a king size.

Anyway can anyone recommend a mattress? I know it's a personal thing. How about a sleep number mattress, anyone have one of those?

I'm in the same boat, but my mattress is really old and I think it's causing some back problems.

I've looked at one place, and geez, they are expensive. I think it's probably best to shell out some bucks for one that will last. I don't like the memory foam ones, they feel like sand. People love the sleep number; haven't checked that out or researched much yet.

Yes, they are expensive, the problem is you don't know how it will be until about 6 months in, and by then the warranty is usually up and you can't return it. We paid a good bit for the one we have now and I've never been really happy with it, except for maybe the first couple months.

We have been considering a sleep number, but it seems the reviews are either they love it or they hate it... not too much in between.... and they are expensive also!

we just bought a new bed as our 12 year old one was causing me back pain and making my hubby's back even worse.

We are on a tight budget right now due to hubby's back circumstances, and so we went with what we could afford, which was an Ikea matress and boxspring. It is a sleep zone one with built-in memory foam top. It doesn't move around at all, so if I get into bed and he's already asleep, the bed doesn't move at ALL, and it doesn't wake him up. It is extremely comfy and has made a big difference for both of us.

We bought a sleep number several years ago...we went through 3 pumps and two matresses before my side would hold air through the night! No, I'm not that big!

My wife loves it...I'm still not sold...I sleep well enough, but for the price I wouldn't do it again.

However, if you choose to go this route..spend the money and get the higher level bed....it has more foam padding on the top and a larger bladder.

My father, brother, sister and Sister in Law all have the memory foam beds and absolutely love them.

Slept a couple of nights on a sleep number bed at a Radisson hotel a few years ago and hated it. Thats a LOT different than owning one but after that I wouldnt buy one personally. Sleep number beds are tough because as someone said you either love them or hate them. I know people that love their sleep number bed, it just wasnt for me.

Before you get the sleep number please check out the reviews on the company and issues a lot of people are having. If you are sensitive to mold it may be a very bad idea to get.

With that being said. They are incrediably comfortable and being able to adjust the bed as needed is great.

Never tried one, but I love the beds that they have at Westin Hotels. So many people like them that they actually offer them for sale.

Thanks everyone! I think we might go out tonight and check some out. Ugh, I am not looking forward to this.... it's kind of like car shopping, I always feel like I'm being ripped off.

Plus we were trying to figure out how to fit the king bed in our relatively small bedroom But I'll do with less furniture in the room to have the bigger bed.

Oh and then I told Steve that the room will need to be painted also....

Hi Mercy. I do not like our sleep number bed at all. When we moved 5 years ago I wanted to to get a real bed. A bed. A bed I could find regular sheets and comforters for. So we got rid of our waterbed and got a sleep number bed thinking it would be the best. I would give anything to have that water bed back. A waterbed is the best bed in my opinion. I wonder if anyone has a regular waterbed anymore?
