Shelac/Gelac Nails
Am coming to Tulum for 7 weeks and need to find a place that does nails. (as title says gelac/shelac) I have asked on the Tulum.info (where I post most of the time) site and there isn't anywhere in Tulum that does it. Is anyone aware of someone that does it in Playa? I did try a search but only found references to those who have had it done before they come down and I will need to get it before and while I am down.
Also, when doing my research I read a few times about nail polish chipping right away. It is my understanding that if you use an ultraviolet light to cure your nails they won't chip. That would be why they stay so much better when you do them at the salon? Thanks for any help!! Last edited by Minniemex; 02-17-2012 at 09:24 AM.. |

Hey, Minniemex, I saw a sign at the nails/beauty salon in Plaza Pelicanos mall (Avenida 10 between calles 8 and 10, where Blockbuster is) that they now do "shellac" nails. I don't know if that's the same thing, as I've never done it. The place does a decent job, and they have autoclaves for sterilizing tools.

Yes, in order for them to cure properly they need to be set using UV light. They are well worth the cost to get them done by a salon unless you are very nail savvy and have a UV light at home like I do (I have a nailpolish problem) One of the coolest things is you can get it and if you want to change color for something (but not ruin your gel mani) you can use any nailpolish over it and as long as you use NON-Acetone remove the top layer of normal nailpolish willl come off but your gel mani will remain in excellent condition.
The only real downside is you need to go back to the salon to have it removed (or go to Sally Beauty and get the remover pads for about 8$) I got a pedicure with it back in December and it has not chipped yet and I have just filled in the new growth with other colors and have had fun practicing my nail art since I do not have to redo the whole nail every time I flub it. |

I love my regular old gel nails......sometimes I get two coats of colour in between gel layers and it lasts 4 weeks, but usually I get a plain old French mani. (Also of course I could put on a colour so long as I use non acetone remover. But I don't, I am lazy.
)I never have any issues at all with lifting/peeling/chipping or yellowing with my gels, they are indestructible and I spend zero time on my nails other than that 35 minutes once a month.....love my little Vietnamese nail salon!! ![]()
