EDM, Iberostar Grand, ERC.... Help
Any help would be appreciated.
Me and my wife are celebrating our 10 aniversary and I think i have narrowed it down to these. We like beaches, good food, good pools and good drinks. We have stayed at Secrets Maroma, Grand Velas, Royal Hideaway, and another low end resort when we were fresh out of college (dont remember the name but like it, just not on the same scale as the others.) We loved all these resort. Felt the food was the best Velas or Hideaway, and of course the beach was the best at Maroma. We are wanting to try another resort. Any comments are welcome, especially if you have been lucky to go to all 3. Thanks in advance. |

Just did a property inspection at El Dorado Maroma, great beach there. Have stayed at the other two as well. You just can't go wrong with any of those choices. The Grand is, well, more grand than Excellence. I thought the food was a bit better too. El Dorado Maroma is much smaller and more intimate than the other two, so if you think you'd like a small boutique style hotel, then it would work. If you like something bigger with more dining and entertainment options, look to the other two.

Thanks Shammy,
Im having a hard time deciding. Our last trip was to Secrets Maroma and I think its the best beach I have ever been to. I'm worried I'll be disappointed at other areas. Do think i'll be disappointed at the beach at the grand. Also, can i tell by your tone you enjoed the grand over excellence. Thanks |

The beach at the IB* Grand is not like the beach at Secrets Maroma. The beach at El Dorado Maroma is like the beach at Secrets Maroma. While sand is sand, the ocean is quite different at the Grand vs. Maroma. It's darker and rougher, and swimming directly in front of the Grand can be tough as there are some rocky areas. We walked down and swam in front of the Lindo/Maya area. But the hotel is great, shouldn't be anyh dissapointment there. And I did like Excellence, although I liked Excellence Playa Mujeres better than Excellence Riviera Cancun. Don't have anything bad to say about either though, but the Grand does get a nod over Riviera Cancun, as far as my personal ratings go.

I've been to Iberostar Grand 8 times, Royal Hideaway 4 times (the last time Nov/Dec 2010, horrible disappointed as the other 3 times were awesome). Excellence RC once - beyond horrible disappointed. Going back to the Grand for the 9th time this August.
I've heard Grand Velas is amazing, but it allows kids. Secrets Maroma has the best beach, but if you haven't tried Iberostar Grand, you should. |

FYI.... Actran
W went to the grand Velas when it first opened so there was really no one there. the most we saw in the restaurants was 10 people, so I'm not sure if we got the real experience. I can tell you though that the service was amazing and the food I would put up with some of the best restaurants I have been too. the beach was not as nice (some rocks) or the water as emerald as some other places in playa ( more blue), but the rooms and everything else was awesome. We felt everything about it was first class, even more so than the other places we have been too. No kids when we were there but I understand they have an adult only area. We like to go to adult only as well because we don't get away from the kids much. |

Are you sure you're reading info about the right hotel? El Dorado Maroma and not El Dorado Royale?
![]() El Dorado Maroma is on Maroma beach, said to be one of the 10 best in the world. The beach is very very nice, no visible rocks (that I saw anyway). |
