The stars are aligning.

My fresh out of college computer geek employee, spilled his diet coke in his laptop. Hmmmm. Burned out the power supply. Hmmm. Okay it was old, but it worked. So I had him borrow my extra Toshiba Laptop, Win 7, and slow (did I say slow). So I will probably give my 6 month old T520 luggable, I7, 4G, 146G SSD, 15.5" screen to my Sr DBA, and his will go to college geek employee.

So boss has told me to get an Airbook, 13" screen, 256SSD, . . . He said I'll like, especially the command line (I'm a unix hack) . I'm just not sure, I'm so used to Win (although not a great fan of Win). I'll look at a couple ultrabooks this weekend then let him know what to get me.

Comparable MacBook Air, compared to what I have now, $1699.00 retail

Once you go to the terminal window in OS X (UNIX), you'll never go back

Apple - Press Info - New iPad Tops Three Million

Quote:
CUPERTINO, California―March 19, 2012―Apple® today announced it has sold three million of its incredible new iPad®, since its launch on Friday, March 16. The new iPad features a stunning new Retina™ display, Apple’s new A5X chip with quad-core graphics, a 5 megapixel iSight® camera with advanced optics for capturing amazing photos and 1080p HD video, and still delivers the same all-day 10 hour battery life* while remaining amazingly thin and light. iPad Wi-Fi + 4G supports ultrafast 4G LTE networks in the US and Canada, and fast networks around the world including those based on HSPA+ and DC-HSDPA.**

“The new iPad is a blockbuster with three million sold―the strongest iPad launch yet,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “Customers are loving the incredible new features of iPad, including the stunning Retina display, and we can't wait to get it into the hands of even more customers around the world this Friday.”

The new ipad I hear can get pretty hot and it seems to be using much more of ones data plan, two and three times faster than the old one.

the data usage is due to 4G

It gets about warmer then the previous version, but is within thermal limits according to Apple and Consumer Reports - and a lot cooler than most laptops

If a hot laptop burns your lap, what does a hot IPad burn?

I have not found the new ipad to get that hot. There is one area that gets warm but nothing that is concerning. I have other devices that get considerably warmer.

I watched a movie the other day with the ipad leaning against my leg and had no problems with heat.

It is not hot

It may be a hand warmer in the cold wintertime, under heavy graphics use

There are obvious no gamers on here using the ipad. But you don't have to be one for it to get hot.

New iPad Overheating? Apple Responds To Allegations As Consumer Reports Investigates

These quotes are from the Apple Community Forum.

"Mine is overheating. The heat is reduced when the brightness is reduced but what's the point of that? It drains the battery fast too. And exchange doesn't seem to be a solution since they all appear to have the same defect issue. I am going to wait one week to see if there are any solutions from Apple, if not, they can have it. I am very disappointed. Been an Apple cool aid drinker for the past 12 years. But I may have had my fill."

"I agree roger I'm an avid apple fan, who usually thinks they do no wrong I might be going back to an iPad 2 also. The hot heat and long recharge times and inability to use on 100% brightness seem like a deal breaker for me.

Now I wonder if my eyes will let me unsee the glorious retina display"

"Mine seems to get very warm...much more so than my original or my iPad 2. What is the Apple Store Return policy?"

"Mine does get warm on the lower left side. Not super hot, but uncomfortably warm. I hope it is a defect that Apple will fix. I will return otherwise."

"yes, it is getting hot after 15' use it. i can't hold it in my hand. i think apple should do something about this problem."

" The new iPad does get hot after 20 min. Looks like I'm not the only one with this problem. Maybe apple should call this new iPad, your new frying pan also. After 20 minutes cook some eggs on it.. Apple should really release something for this. People shouldn't invest all this money
and buy another iPad with upgraded specs same like design 90% identicaland have this issue. It should be fully tested by engineers before laying out in market. Yes it does look like the warming generates from the bottom left
of back of iPad."

" I returned mine for an iPad 2. The iPad 3 wasn't hot, but warm enough to be uncomfortable. That plus the extra weight made it not worth the new display to me, as awesome as it is. I can understand how a MBP or iMac could run hot, but those things you can put on a desk or in your lap with a pillow or something. However, the iPad
is designed to be held by you at all
times. It's important that it runs cool. I'd even be OK if the iPad 3 got warm during an intensive game or while playing HD video, but it gets warm even after about 3 minutes of casual web browsing. As a side note: When I went to return mine and mentioned it was running warm the reps went into a speech explaning that it can run warm."

" This morning on a full charge
First 1 1/2 hours of constant use of
safari emails twitter kindle app rss at 25% brightness I only used 5% battery 1 hour of same use at 100% brightness used 18% and the iPad got noticeably warm all over. Not just the left corner ( which seems way way higher that it was on my ipad2, but I traded that off
so I can't compare anymore
This is with no videos or downloads or games being played."

" Hi there, my iPad 3 is extremely hot down the LEFT HAND SIDE and the remainder of the backing is warm. Is there a fix ?? I have only used it for close to 30 minutes for surfing the web"

" I have the same problem with the new iPad heating issue. I only used it for a few minutes and it becomes hot! This never happened to my 1st iPad and iPad 2. I returned the unit back to Best Buy. I am disappointed"

"My new iPad gets too hot. Don't care to measure how hot because it's simply unpleasant and interferes with the seamless use of this amazing technology. I find I think twice about how I want to use it, what all my settings should be, when will it get too uncomfortable to keep using....Heat was never an issue with my iPad 1&2. Totally seamless user experience with little to remind me I was using a computer. The heat issue really takes away some of the "magical" for me.

And 116f is hot not warm.
