Small Wedding
I have read online about the blood tests, paperwork, needed to get married in Playa. There will be just the two of us. Looking for a simple beach wedding. We will be staying at the Playa Maya mid May. Any ideas and recommendations would be really appreciated.
Thank you |

Hubby and I stayed at the Playa Maya last month. While we were there a couple got married (they were also guests) under the Playa Maya's original palapa. It was just the two of them. It was very lovely and sweet. We talked to them later in the week and they said the hotel employees were wonderful to work with on their wedding plans. So I would start by contacting the Playa Maya. It was a lovely place for a wedding!

If it's a legal wedding, you do have some legwork to do. You do have to be in Mexico at least 3 days prior to thw wedding, have your blood work done there, have your paperwork translated, and other things. Doesn't matter if it's 2 people or 20 people. You might want to look into hiring a wedding coordinator as well, there are a few good ones in the area that can sort through every last detail for you.

You could do what Rick and I did. We did the legal stuff in the US. It was fast and easy and cheap. And then we had the ceremony, a REAL wedding, somewhere nice. That way, you can focus on the fun stuff and not worry about the legal stuff. The legal stuff is a lot more complicated here.
Anyway, we were thinking about a beach wedding, but we decided instead to do it on the Fat Cat boat. It was awesome!!!! |

It was actually easier for us (from Ontario, Canada) to do everything there. Had we gotten married here, we would have had to apply for a marriage license prior to the wedding. The wedding planner at our resort took care of everything and all we had to do was get the certificate translated when we got home ($50 and an hour later I was sending it off to change my name), the only reason we had to get the translation done was because I was changing my name. I guess is all depends on what the requirements are where you live.

We had to get a marriage license. Got it in the morning and the judge married us in the afternoon. After looking into it all, I would never do it any differently. Oh. And we didn't have a wedding planner. Except us and the Fat Cat. |

And if you want to take a few (ok, more than a few
) minutes to view, this was our wedding on the Fat Cat. It was perfect ![]() EDIT: Ok. The Youtube video doesn't work outside of Mexico because of strict music copyright laws. I've posted the same video below from Vimeo. They aren't as controlled as Youtube. I hope. Last edited by Babaloo; 04-02-2012 at 08:42 PM.. |

For legal weddings, as opposed to symbolic ones:
Legal Requirements Consent People under the age of 18 may not get married in Mexico without parental consent. With parental consent, boys have to be at least 16 and girls need to be at least 14 years of age. Foreigners Getting Married to Foreigners You don't need to be resident in Mexico in order to get married here, you'll just need a passport and your tourist permit, plus some other paperwork. Chest X-rays and Blood Tests These must be done locally in Mexico, as the results of the blood tests and the X-ray documentation must be in Spanish and the tests need to be done within a certain time frame of the Marriage Application Form being completed. Not all Mexican States require the Chest X-rays: Check locally or ask your wedding planner. Four Witnesses You will need to have 4 witnesses present at the legal ceremony, and they must have valid identification: usually a valid Passport is used, but other forms of government-issued identification are valid too. Validity Outside of Mexico Your Marriage Certificate will be valid world-wide, BUT you should get your certificate 'legalized' in Mexico to ensure it is legally accepted when you get back home. The process is the reverse of getting your native documentation legalized by the necessary authorities (e.g. Foreign Office / State Department) for marriage in Mexico (see below); The registry office in Mexico will tell you where this can be done locally or if you hire a wedding planner, he/she will advise. The couple getting married will be required to present the following documentation: Important! Foreign documents listed below (with the exception of your passport and travel permit) will need to be:
Marriage Application Forms These forms are attained from the local registry office in Mexico. You will need to specify whether you will get married under joint or separate property on this form. Passport Full Passport, valid for at least 6 months and a copy of same (both the bride and groom). Travel Permits Original copies of the tourist permit (FMM) which was completed at the port of entry or other immigration permit (FM3, FM2, etc.). Birth Certificates These will need to be certified and translated by an approved translator. Contact your nearest Mexican Consulate for details about certification. Divorce Decree / Death Certificate If the woman was previously married, or either partner is widowed, copies of the Divorce Decree or Death Certificate, if applicable, (see section above: Previously Married) will be required for presentation. Blood Test Results Written results of the blood test, written in Spanish (get blood test done in Mexico). |
