Long term apartment rental
Hi All,
I am brand new to this board and am so glad to have found it! I currently live in LA but am starting to plan a transition to PlayaCar for anywhere from 6 months to a year to work on my Spanish and just experience life in the Riviera Maya. I was wondering if anyone could give me information on how best to go about finding a long term apartment rental. I've seen some postings on Craigslist, but not much, and searches on google have mostly turned up vacation rentals that are by the night or week. Thanks in advance for your help! ~Summer |

Hola, I live in PLAYACAR and is a good choice. For your first time I suggest Centro, is very busy, you can walk everywhere, the beach, coffee shops, bars, Walmart. You will meet nice people, and if you really want to learn Spanish, just talk to locals. By the time Playacar is a nice place to live, you have to walk or bike a little more, the choice is good.

Thanks everyone for this very helpful information! It's great to hear your thoughts on the realities of learning Spanish in PlayaCar and where in town is good to live. I guess I had my sights on PlayaCar because I've been there before (not surprisingly, as a tourist) and thought it seemed like a nice town and I really loved the beaches.
Ultimately, I'm looking to move somewhere 1) with good opportunities for learning Spanish both through courses and talking with the locals; 2) safe; and 3) close to the beach I've never been to Cancun but what it seems to represent doesn't really appeal to me. I was also looking at Merida but I'm not sure it's close enough to the beach for me (geez that sounds spoiled!).Do you think there's anywhere in Quintana Roo or Yucatan that would be especially good for my goals? |

Okay, I feel really dumb - I thought that Playacar was the abbreviation for Playa del Carmen! Haha, I just realized that it's a part of town and full of resorts! Now I understand why people were advising to stay away! Yes, I definitely think Centro would be better for me and much more like what I'm looking for. I'm sure there are still going to be tourists, but I'm hoping to live somewhere a little more authentic.
As for my budget - I'm hoping to live off of around $2000/month total, including language classes, which seem to be about $800 month. So, about $1200 for living which, I guess will mostly be housing and food (and I generally cook at home and don't go out for drinks very often). I'll probably be living off of savings, so the more I spend, the less time I can afford to stay ![]() @snappysammy - your place sounds ideal, although I'm not sure if my budget is anywhere near what you normally ask for your place, and also when it would be available. We should definitely talk. I also am hoping to take my two very small chihuahuas, Zoe and Franny, with me in the move! Thanks again everyone, I'm already learning so much! |
