Colectivo to Tulum - Specifics please
I am a details freak and like to feel prepared before a "journey" and if I'm not I drive the soon-to-be hubby insane, so thanks in advance! I posted a similar post last spring before our first visit to Akumal via colectivo and we had an awesome time...so I need the same descriptors for Tulum this time around!
We've been on the Yukatreks Tulum tour before but now want to take the colectivo to the beach & bar area for a day. Could someone please explain this process for me? I know where to catch the colectivos in Playa but where to get off at Tulum and where to go after...I see a lot of people take cabs once dropped off but is it too far of a walk? Happy Friday! As my friend David said, take the bus from the Playa bus station to the bus station in Tulum. Then just take a taxi from there to the beach, wherever/whatever beach club you want to go to. Modern bus with A/C, Playa right to the bus station. Really doesn't make sense to do a colectivo to Tulum when the bus is so easy........

True, unless you are on a tight budget, then the colectivo is really cheap. The Colectivo (van) stop is on calle 2 between Avenida 10 & 15. can't miss it. It's about $2.50USD to Tulum town - walk out to El Camelo for a GREAT (and insanely affordable) f.r.e.s.h. seafood lunch - just keep walking on the highway, just a little past the end of the shops on the main highway going south. a taxi to most beach hotels will be about $4.USD from Tulum town. |

Hi guys. Does the colectivo stop at the ruins? If we go to the ruins and then want to go in town to eat the fresh seafood in the earlier post will we need a taxi or is that walking distance? Also is there only certain times the colectivos run?
Thanks! |

The colectivo will stop outside of the ruins- on 307 just like any other stop. The driver will only stop there if you tell him to, however.
We've paid as little as 40 pesos for a taxi from the pueblo to the beach area- but we were going to Copal, which was close to the access road. Finally, depending on the colective driver and time of day- we've found the colectivo to be quicker than the ADO with the bonus of not having to be ready at a specific time to meet a bus. That works for our vacation style, because we like to relax and play the day by ear. Colectivos can definitely be crowded and hot, however. We tend to avoid peak commuter times because we feel bad about taking a seat from somebody trying to get to work, so they're usually not too crowded when we're on them. We do sometimes take the bus back from Tulum, because after spending a day drinking beer on the beach, it's nice to know there's a bathroom available if you need it
