Looking for suggestions on what to do, or not do

My wife and I will be at puerto aventuras at the end of May. I'm looking for some suggestions on things we should definitely do, and maybe some things we shouldn't waste our time on. We've been to Playa and Cozumel before. But no where else. Here's a breakdown of our interests and initial thoughts.

- we love the beach
- we love snorkeling (plan to bring our own equipment)
- want to see the Tulum ruins
- thinking that we want to snorkel a cenote or two
- don't want to spend our entire 5 day trip traveling (plan to mostly stay at resort)
- wife enjoys sunning topless

Any suggestions will be appreciated. We're considering the Yucatreks tour to Tulum, or perhaps taking a colectivo and doing it ourselves. Thanks for your help.

Do the Tulum and Beyond Tour. You'll see Tulum, swim/snorkel in a cenote, and have lunch on an awesome beach. We REALLY enjoyed that day! Small group with lots of attention to detail. I highly recommend it!!

Edit: you go to TWO cenotes! Both very different and beautiful!

Agree with the Tulum & beyond. For snorkeling you can go to Akumal and see turtles and other fish species and tan on the beach or since you are in Puerto Aventuras, take the Fat Cat or Catamaya catamaran and go on a snorkel booze cruise.

Thanks, you've convinced me to book this tour. Does small group mean the tour company is a small group, or that you went on the tour with a small group?

How/where do we find these catamaran cruises?

I agree with the Tulum and Beyond Tour. My wife and I went on it and had a blast. We had around 8 people with us plus our Driver and Guide in a van. No big bus full of people, more like friends going on a trip. Two Cenotes, the ruins and an awesome lunch on a beautiful, private beach.

When visiting the ruins, are you also able to go to the beach? I've read so many people saying that the beach at the ruins is beautiful.

And now that I've been reading some more, snorkeling at Akumal sounds amazing. Again, we don't want to spend all of our time running around, but could we conceivably take a colectivo from Catalonia Royal Tulum to Akumal and experience what we need to in another half day?

You should rent a harley motorcycle! you can do a day trip from playa del carmen to tulum, stopping by sink holes for a nice swim! check out the tulum ruins, have lunch somewhere there - theres also a really nice beach just after the ruins wher eyou can chill for a while and then head back!

check out this video

Interesting since I have a Harley here. I might be interested in that one day, but again, I don't want to spend a lot of time on the go. I've been there and done that on trying to fit everything into just a few days. We're looking forward to some down time.

I 3rd the Tulum tour. It's a great time for kids and adults alike. The small group assures you'll have a great time. Tulum is breathtaking, the cenotes are very different, yet each is interesting, and the beach is beautiful and secluded. Just don't lose your wallet and make your tour guide go back to the first cenote and find it.

Thanks for all of the great advice, but now I'm second guessing myself. Here's why: My wife can't do cool water. She has a low tolerance for cool water. I know the cenotes aren't cold, but supposedly they are significantly cooler than the ocean. So I'm afraid I'd be exploring the cenotes by myself.

Another consideration is that I don't want to spend half my time traveling around... we want some down time at the resort. So if I do a full day with the Yucatrek tour, I'll have to eat into another day to go to Akumal. Ugh.

So here's my current idea (who knows what I'm going to do). We could take a Colectivo to the Tulum Ruins and hire a guide there. Spend several hours there, and when we're ready, get a ride back to Akumal. Eat lunch there and spend the afternoon snorkeling. That way we get the ruins and Akumal in the same day. I'll be sacrificing the cenotes for now, but I'm feeling like I might be the only one of us two participating in that.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Ruins and Akumal is a good day. And unless I am just really fast, the ruins at Tulum won't take several hours. I think the one time we hired a guide it was less than an hour, then maybe wander on your own to get more pics. Get there early when it is not as hot, do your thing and then you will have time for a relaxing and enjoyable visit to Akumal.
Just my 2 pesos.
