prepaid card?

I have been reading alot of post and searched and found many of my questions but this is my first time ever taking a trip anywhere so if you could answer these couple questions it would be very much appreciated.

1. can I check into the resort using a prepaid card (for incidentals)
and if so what would i need for a balance?

2. I dont want to use any of my Credit or debit cards and I dont want to carry alot of cash but I'm worried that for some reason I will get to Playa and my card wont work and I will be broke for the whole week?

3. I will be using peso's and plan on getting them from a ATM so will a prepaid be ok.

I plan on bringing some cash in case my cards have problems but any tips would help alot. TOTALLY NEW TO TRAVEL and a little worried about being so far away with no funds.

I would check with the resort about the prepaid card. I know we looked into prepaid cards at one time and some were not good outside the US.

A lot of the places will not take those prepaid cards that do not have your name stamped on them.

I actually went out and got an American Express Prepaid -
I received it in the mail after about 5-10 business days. Name is printed on the card, PIN # was sent in a seperate mailing, so I'm all good.

According to the website, this is accepted any place in the world AMEX is. Of course, you should always have a backup plan....

Check out the FAQ on use...

jwright - just got my pre-paid Visa card yesterday in fact. It's only used for the atm to get pesos out - nothing else. We call the regular Visa to let them know that we will be in Mexico during certain dates - in case we need to use it - so it's not blocked. Our hotel is already paid for though.

Hope you have a great trip

I go down about 3 times a year and just take my regular card. I do call the bank and tell them when I will be there. Not only for use, but so that they will know if my card comes up in Mexico after I have left. This always works out well and only use Bank ATM's not the ones on the street. When are you going?

My wife brings her prepaid credit/debit card for the past several years. Looks just like a credit card. It works everywhere she needs to use it. I don't recall if she has used it when checking in for incidentals... We also call all the banks when we go on vacation and let them know where we will be, and how long we will be there.

Hi

We brought a pre paid Travelex card in Feb and to be honest wouldn't bother - it was a pain in the butt!! Only certain ATM's would accept it so generally you are better with a regular credit card. We ended up using it mainly in the bank opposite coco bongos. We brought it as our condo didn't have a safe so we were a bit concerning bringing lots of cash. It was our first time outside an all inclusive and loved it so much more.
