On a happy note, this photo was posted in March. Lucky was scheduled to be killed:

A friend of mine saw the photo and he and his big heart decided to save her. Look at her now!!!

These dogs can have happy lives, if only people will help!

It's amazing how they begin so quickly to thrive with some love and support.

I'm hoping to start a discussion about what might be able to be done about improving the situation at the perrera. I know that there is a petition to close it down, but I am wondering if it is possible or worthwhile to look at working with them.

For example, I have read that many of these dogs owners don't care enough to come and claim them. But perhaps some would take them back if it were made easier. The perrera is inaccessible and staff don't contact those few owners that happen to have put ID tags on their dogs. Maybe volunteers could do this?

As well, perhaps it would be worthwhile to see if a partnership could be created with some of the pet stores in the area to take a few of the dogs instead of buying puppies from god knows where.

Finally, I wonder if the local population even knows that there is a perrera. The posting of the photos of the dogs here is a great start, but is it being done on a local website in Spanish?

Oops, pressed send by accident. . .

So, what do the experienced people on this thread think of my ideas? Are they a waste of time?
Are there ways to work with the perrera?
Are there things that could be done that would be better than the periodic raids that take place of the pererra when the volunteers and the volunteer organizations have the time and the room to take them?

Grateful for the thoughts and views of those who deal with this problem more directly than I do.

Please tell me what I can do to help - I live in Texas, so I feel pretty helpless but I would love to do anything I can. I understand time is critical here, what can I do?

There is a woman here named Sylvie Goetz and she is working very hard to save as many perrera dogs as she can. She works directly with the workers at the perrera. However, she has very little control over how the perrera works....she can only help by pulling dogs out before they die. Sylvie's organization is called SOS el Arca. Those of us posting here are really doing so in order to help her, to get the word out to others, so that they can help, too.

I believe it is possible to work with the perrera. There is an non-profit organization in Cancun that works with the Cancun perrera, and now there is even a clinic there, and no dog leaves without first being spayed or neutered. The organization is Centro De Atencion Canina.

We bathed this dog today before we took him to Sylvie's shelter. I named him Pedro because I had to call him something! He is sweet but very, very scared.

I think in just a little bit of time he will get back to his old self and relax.

OK! Here are photos of our morning with "Pedro." He's bathed, de-ticked and in a safe place now.

He's just out of the perrera in this photo:

Here he is getting a bath:

We drove him to Sylvie's and he did NOT want to get out of the car. But look how beautiful he is:

Good morning! Thank you for your interest for the dogs. Sylvie, owner of BYBLOS restaurant goes every day to the perrera. its right behind the jail, quite far. Many dog owners do not have a car, and taxis won't allow dogs, and many won't drive up to there ( its unpaived in the end)

Very few dogs arrive with a tag, and if they do, Sylvie calls the owners, but normally they don't have one. Many have collars but no tags. Sylvie is working with the municipio to work something out to better the situation of the digs She has been working with them for over a year and is achieving results. We are thinking of organizing one day a week to take people without cars to pick a dog at the perrera to adopt. Most of the woners of the dogs never go to vets but it could still be a good idea. Every idea to improve things is more than welcome.

SOS el Arca also has 2 houses with 70 dogs ready for adoption, all rescuesform the perrera, and already vaccinated. We will start posting their pictures soon. For every dog that gets adopted, there is space for a dog to be saved from the perrera.
Volunteering to help walk the dogs and clean the poop is always more than welcome, as donations to buy the medicines. Coco Cat rescue does lend a big hand by spaying and neutering the dogs that sylvie takes out.

p.s- its not periodic raids, its something that sylvie does every single morning. every day she tries to save as many as she can. with the help of other people and associations, a lot more could be done.

If you go on facebook page of sos el arca you will have more information!
