Cigarettes and customs...

Hi everyone...

I've been searching online and through the forum threads but I seem to be having some problems finding answers to my questions. I'm positive someone will be able to help me here.

How many cartons of cigarettes per person are you allowed to bring back into the US from Mexico? I keep getting conflicting reports. Some things I read said 1000 cigarettes per person and somewhere else I read only 200 per person.

Also...and I'm sure this gets asked frequently...what's the average price for a carton of cigarettes now?

I don't smoke but a person travelling with me does and asked me to find this out for them.

You can bring in one carton duty free.
Beyond one carton you can be charged approximately $1.00 per pack.
But they have to know you have them. Some folks don't declare.
Cigarettes are running about 40 pesos per pack - I'm guessing the carton price is around 300 pesos.

Each person can bring one carton of cigarettes back to the USA duty free. After that one carton, IF they find that you have more than one per person, it's $10/carton tax. They are $29/carton these days. I just got back from Cabo and bought a 3 carton package for my friend, it was $88. I declared that I had cigarettes on my customs form and their value was $88 (they do not ask how many cigarettes/cartons you have, just the value). I was traveling with another person so we were allowed 2 cartons and they didn't ask what I had, just took the customs form and we were on our way. But, if they had asked, they could have made me pay $10 for that extra carton, that has happened to clients of mine.

Cheap comparing to Canada ,,, 12.50 per pack to buy up here, 30 dollars duty if you go over limit coming back or if they are Not Canadian smokes.

I just came back from Playa into Newark Airport

I was flying in by myself , I put in the customs form

That I had 2 cartons of cigarettes , 2 bottles of vodka

The customs agent asked me that's all you declaring , I said yes

He said ok you done , Next person..
