License 'lost' at Soriana
Just got back last Saturday from Playa. My wife and I did a day trip to Akumal, on the way there had the taxi driver stop at Soriana so we could pick up some tanning products.
Anyway, my wife went in to make the purchase while I waited outside. Fast forward 5 hours, we're sitting at Lo Ha, and my wife realizes she doesn't have her license. Back at Soriana they asked for it due to paying with a credit card ($17!). We went back there, the same checkout person was there, and of course had no recollection of anything. A manager there was also of no help. What possible benefit is there to stealing someone's license? A replacement is on the way now, but really? Does this happen often? Thanks! (passports stay in the hotel safe each and every trip!) Mitch |

Lost license
Hi James! Yes we looked all through the purse and backpack we had that day, but her credit card was neatly tucked in the purse so I assumed the license would have been put away there as well. She just got her replacement license in the mail about an hour ago! Apparently the license photo is saved at the RMV so she didn't even have to go in to renew it. Off topic - James have you been back to Playa since moving away?

Last June, after a long day at Ziggy's, our driver (as per our request to stop) took us to a liquor store as we arrived back in Playa. Can't remember the name, but it's on 307, west side, I think just north of the 'new' overpass. Anyhow, as we were unloading at the condo, I realized I had left my camera ($500) on the counter when I set it down to pay for the booze. Our driver offers to take me back, we arrive app. 30 minutes after we had 1st left the liquor store. The cashier saw me, smiled, reached under the counter and handed me my camera. Would not accept a tip/reward for her honesty. Just posting this to remind us all that Playa, like anywhere else, has good merchants along with the few bad ones. I will only use that liquor store now, even if it costs a few more pesos, because of the way they made MY mistake turn out with a good ending.

Nothing to gain from someone stealing an out-of-country driver's license; it's not like it's a passport or anything. If the cashier did hold on to it, it was likely an oversight and got lost, or--as James said--maybe your wife lost it somewhere else/dropped it. On the rare occasion I've been asked for ID along with a card, they'll hand the ID back along with the card, so if the card wasn't missing, it doesn't seem likely they held onto the ID.
To tell the truth, I am MOST impressed that the cashier asked for ID along with the credit card. That hardly ever happens. |

You know, considering my carefree attitude and alcohol intake while in Mexico, it's a wonder I've never lost my ID or CC or $ there. Actually, nothing bad has ever happened to me there. Lucky, I guess.
Dang, I miss it...I wish I were there now. |

this post reminded me of the time we were at soriana and jessica was adamant that someone just "stole" her mobile. i asked if it was just in her purse somewhere... not a smart thing to ask in that situation apparently!
well, she went and talked to security and they went and talked to the checkout people. meanwhile i held her purse and decided to open it up... amazingly the mobile was inside! the thief must have felt guilty and returned it! ![]() after apologies and a red face we left the shop. not everything ends up stolen in mexico! on a side note: i left my backpack with wallet, ID, camera, etc. on the metro in osaka it took the metro security two hours to locate it. they were holding it for us at the end of the line and let us travel both directions for free to retrieve it. all this on the morning we were flying out! jessica did remind me that i was lucky and that that wouldn't have happened in DF.
