It's the last day of a looong vacation. Back to the ole grind tomorrow. I'm doing my best to get back to normal. Got a whole chicken grilling and listening to some good classic rock and of course, enjoying SEVERAL beers while I watch the chicken slowly cook. It's a good day.

Went into the den and gave a good look at my dad's old navy picture and service medals from WW2. It's literally the only thing I have of his. 20 years in the navy as a flight deck chief on some of the historically famous carriers. He went through some of the major naval campaigns of the war. He never talked about it. After growing up and seeing lots of old footage, I totally understand.

A heartfelt thank you to all of you who served.

We had a few friends over for a cookout and pool party...It was great seeing a "flyover". It certainly got our attention and also reminded us why we are free to celebrate the day.

I REALLY miss that. Growing up in San Diego, naval jets and sonic booms were just everyday life. I used to sit on my porch and watch the Blue Angels doing practice runs in the distance over NAS Miramar.

Here in Oregon, I rarely see military aircraft. HA! My little brother ( who lives nearby) will call me. "Hey did you hear the ------ fly over!? He grew up listening to them too.

We live about 3 miles from a big cemetary that has Memorial Day services every year. I was surprised and didn't expect them to fly over our neighborhood since we are not located in the line of fire. (flight path). I was in the house when I heard a loud rumble and ran out just in time to see the jets..They had already passed over the cemetary and were making a wide turn to return back to base. I guess the winds were in our favor. I almost forgot how loud they are.

Which makes me remember...Does anybody else remember sonic booms? They would scare the hell out of you and rattle the windows.

When I was growing up sonic booms were standard occurences. I guess that's what happens when you build houses around air bases. My dad said there was actually a claus in the home owners contract that no complaints based on jet noise would be validated. Don't like the noise, don't live in this neighborhood.

The nearest base is a good 20-30 miles from where I lived growing up.(Naval air station) we heard them mostly in the 60's...I guess all the young pilots were doing it back then...I guess maybe it wasn't a big deal anymore and the counties and the cities told them to knock it off.
The is a base west of Ft Worth..Carswell..I'm not sure it's still open anymore.
The last time I heard a sonic boom was from the space shuttles coming in for a landing. Those entries were grand to watch..especially at night..It looked like a huge bottlerocket arching across the sky.

We lived near an airforce base when I was growing up and heard sonic booms regularly. I do kinda miss that. My kids have no idea what I am talking about.

Does anybody remember fallout shelters? They had those signs on buildings to designate if it had a fallout shelter. My mother would never let me eat snow because she said it had fallout in it.
