Laguna Bacalar and southern Q Roo ruins- any recommendations?

We are thinking of staying in Bacalar for a night or two while on our southern road trip from Playa this December. Does anyone have a recommendation for lodging?

We will probably want to check out some ruins while down there. Kohunlich, with its Pyramid of the Masks, looks pretty cool.

Has anyone been down that way recently?

Was going to recommend Kohunlich based on the thread title. I loved it. Another place where you'll find ceramic fragments all over the place still.

Great idea. I love Bacalar, it's simply one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. The multicolored water is amazing, and the town's a funky, cool little place with a lot of good places to eat. Here's a hotel you might try that's right on the lake:
HOTEL LAGUNA BACALAR

And I also highly recommend Kohunlich. It probably tops my list of favorite ruins I've visited, and that includes Chichen Itza, Uxmal, & Palenque. The Temple of the Masks alone is worth the trip, IMO. And, because it's so remote, when we were there we had the whole site to ourselves.

Bacalar is a beautiful place to visit. It is the lagoon of seven colors, and depending on the weather, you may see all seven.

The town square, around the museum, and the water front have recently received upgrades.

Kohunlich, is a brilliant site, in my opinion. Seeing and learning about, the Temple of the Masks is a great experience. The last time I was there was a year ago. Talking to the archielogists and the people that were helping to preserve the site made the visit very memorable. We drove there ourselves and arrived before the tour busses arrived.

Stopping in Bacalar for a fresh water swim on June 1st.

We were in Bacalar this past October and stayed at a beautiful place called Pehaltun about 10 minutes outside of the town. Ginny is the owner and she has I believe 3 really nice bungalows that she rents out. Beautiful dock and palapa out into the lagoon, very peaceful and quiet, in fact we were the only ones there for days. Sorry I don't have a phone number, but I found it on the forum and got the contact info from there.

I stayed in Pehaltun a couple of years ago and LOVED it. I also have stayed in Hotel Laguna Bacalar--also loved it, but it was more populated than Pehaltun. Ginny might require a 3 nights stay (not sure) so Hotel Laguna Bacalar might be the way to go.

I loved Kohunlich and Bacalar is probably my most favorite place in the world (that I've visited so far, anyway). I think a few days trip is in order.

Thanks for your responses, everyone.
Now I am getting more excited to visit both Bacalar and Kohunlich (how is Kohunlich pronounced, anyway?)...

Pehaltun definitely looks like our kind of place.
We'll only have a night or hmmm, maybe two, though, since we want to spend some more time in Mahahual. Maybe I'll email Ginny and see if she can bend the 3 night minimum.

4.5 hours to Bacalar another hour to Kohunlick. It rocks, totally chill, lots of shaded walking paths, named after the magnificent palms that grow there, reminds me of what you see depicted in movies relating to 18th century India. Look for the moving grass.................

What are we likely to find in the moving grass?

It seems to me it takes us about 3 1/2 hours or so to get to Mahahual. I thought it might take roughly that amount of time to get to Bacalar.
