Nonstop from Newark in March 2013
Ok, so we all know that airfares have been and will always be all over the place. But GET THIS:
Last February we paid $438pp nonstop from Newark - Cancun on Continental, which I had booked the previous August. Not the best price, not the worst. We want to do March next year, so I checked the fares. UNITED - nonstop from Newark is $974!!! SERIOUSLY??? The United/Continental merger has been a nightmare for us here because Newark was a Continental hub, but United is doing away with a lot of routes. But almost $1000??? I CANNOT believe it!! I would have thought that EWR-CUN in the spring was a pretty active route.....Even 1 stop in Charlotte is $542. I'm so depressed - we may not come at all if this doesn't change!! My hope is that this is all part of the "growing pains" of the merger and someone will come to their senses pretty soon and there will be some realistic fares again.....

Prices out of EWR are ridiculous, and United can get away with it (and is) because they are the only non stop option to Cancun out of EWR, people will pay for non stop. The typical fare for the EWR-CUN route is now about $550, gone are the days of anything in the $400's. $300's (which I have also paid) are beyonddddddd history. I'm trying to get to Cabo in October, which is low season and the fare is almost $900. Disgusting.
Having said that, the fares may come down from what you're now seeing. I've seen some of those $550 fares come down into the $400's, rare but it does happen. March is peak high season, and if the plane is almost full to full, it's very very unlikely you'll see that fare drop. Maybe if you are flexible with your dates, you might have better luck. You might also want to sign up for Yapta, and tag the flights you want. If the fare drops, Yapta will e mail you. I see fares in Feb are down in the $500's - so that could happen for March too, it just depends on how full the flights are. And try not to fly on a weekend, that's going to bring the fare up too. If you tell me what dates you were using, I can tell you how many seats are booked on the flights offered that day. Still not a sure indication that the price could drop if they're not heavily booked, but it might give you some hope if the flights are still somewhat open. |

It's $708 to Cancun and $794 to Puerto Vallarta. I don't mich care which place I go but at this rate, I won't be going anywhere!

We too had been looking at flights from Detroit to Cancun..Jan thru March. They started out in the high $900's and we just kept checking everyday. Price came down to $462.00 pp, and like Shammy said, by flying on a Wednesday instead of Tuesday it dropped even more. Of course we booked that flight..however our friends who aren't retired and not as flexible are looking at high prices for a week in February and possible may not make it down this year if they don't get any lower...Keep looking and hopefully you'll hit on something

They don't. No charters from EWR, but Apple has a Frontier charter out of Philly. Also, Aeromexico is now flying non stop out of JFK, along with American and Jet Blue which brings in more competition. That usually means better fares. Aeromexico for your dates is $554/pp so if you can get to that airport, that's a good fare.

Not to be in support of higher airfares and the justifications for it, but here is an interesting article about how airfares compared in the 1970's to today and why.....
