Hotel hopping?

Found some great flight deals so coming in August for 15 days. Having been a long time reader on here I think I saw one thread that suggested having a hotel for the first few days and then walk around and find other places to stay. I guess kinda hotel hopping. Can anyone recommend this? Pros/Cons.

I copy/pasted this from my "introduction" post with no response. Please don't flag. I'm just so damn excited that I'm coming PDC!

While you certainly CAN do that, especially in low season like August, the only question is whether or not you really WANT to spend vacation time bothering with that. Even though you are there for 2 weeks, you will be amazed how many more enjoyable things there are to see and do rather than do hotel comparison shopping.

I personally like to do the research part before the trip, it is more fun that way. And sites like Trip Advisor are so comprehensive with their traveler photos and reviews, it can be even more reliable than just walking by and deciding based on looks.

I think it'd be kind of fun to wing it and have a bit of flexibility to check out other hotels v being locked into a 2 week reservation. An adventure in itself sort of thing. I probably would limit luggage and just drop clothes off for laundry services if needed. Easier than hauling multiple suitcases from hotel to hotel.

I do agree with Erica, however, I should add- two weeks at one place could get a little boring!

If you have two weeks, have you considered staying in two entirely different spots along the Mayan Riviera? It is really not that long a coast.

I would suggest a week in Playa and then a second week in either Akumal or Isla Mujeres.

Also- do you prefer a larger hotel, ocean front hotel, boutique hotel, or maybe a condo stay?

We're kinda anything except larger hotel. A few days right on the beach would be nice, then a few at boutique. I think I've looked up Isla Mujeres before and it's been considered, will look at again. Had not thought staying two different towns. Very interesting. I can not wait!

If I had 15 days, I'd spend some time starting with Isla Mujeres, then to PDC, then Akumal or Tulum to finish it off....my problem is that I don't have 15 days! Have fun planning!

I do this every year (hotel hopping). I reserve a room prior to arriving for 1 week, then spend about 1 hour during my first week walking around Playa checking prices and touring a few rooms. Found a decent room with fridge, tv, and air conditioning for 350 peso's per night for the last 2 weeks of my vacation. This was in late Jan. 2012. You might be able to find even better pricing during the time you are going. If you walk in and ask how much the rooms are, remember that the prices are usually negotiable (sp?). Good luck!

We have been doing hotel hopping for the past 25 years. Get reservations for your first two nights and then start shopping.

Cash usually gets you 50% off. Good Luck

Akumal is a great place to spend part of your time. You can find some great deals for that time of year.

We are coming to PDC for 11 days starting at the end of September. We are having a hard time deciding on a hotel or a condo. I am leaning towards a condo. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I have looked at vrbo and there are a lot of choices. We stayed at Xaman Ha three years ago and enjoyed it. I have been looking at Royal Palms, but am just not sure. Help!
