Puerto Morelos Community Activist Group Has Formed and Seeks Support

Morelos Blog has informed me that there is a new community activist group that has formed, Voces Unidas de Puerto Morelos (United Voices of Puerto Morelos).

They have created a declaration letter, which can be viewed in Spanish, which states the mission of Voces Unidas de Puerto Morelos. This letter is being signed through a notary in order to reflect the official support that the group has by Puerto Morelos Citizens.

They have also created an official denouncement letter siting several Puerto Morelos resorts that are being singled out for ethical, legal, or environmental issues.

For those of you who are out of town but wish to show your support please send the following in an email to vocesunidaspuertomorelos@gmail.com:

Hi Michele, having just gotten back from a stay at the NOW Jade in PM, this piqued my interest. I put the document through Google Translator and found it very interesting. I was suprised that the El Cid was cited for the road closure, but not the NOW Jade, since it's basically the same road that leads to both. From what I can tell, it was the El Cid property management that closed that road?!

What I will say is the road that is closed is in bad, bad shape...and it looks like the center of the street has been split open from end to end! There were, however, people working and construction trucks there every single day. I don't know any of the back story on the closure, but seems like the construction is moving along.

As far as the employee parking violations, this is something I thought of many, many times while travelling down the road to the resorts. Where in the world do the employee's park?! We did see a few lots off the road, but for the most part saw many employees walking the long, hot 3 mile trek from the highway down the dusty, pot-holed road. I felt so bad for them.

As for the Desire's violations, I hope they get that straightened out asap.

Anyway, thanks for sharing!

More on the employee parking...we did talk to many employees and found out that several lived in Cancun (or other areas) and took the bus to work, so not many had cars. But it does still seem like a big problem, still.

Yes, of course! I already did....

By the way, Michele, are you familiar with The Little English Schoolhouse in Puerto Morelos? We brought donations and a computer cable down for Ana and Frank. We also visited the home school and had a wonderful experience. I would love to see this organization get more help from the fine peeps here at PI, but not many people stay in PM. I will post more info and pics once I get unpacked from the trip.
