Grand Coco Bay AI June 5th - 14th, 2012
Okay, here goes the start to my trip report (If someone can remind me how to upload photo's please lol).
We vacationed in Playa Del Carmen from June 5th-14th this year and had a great time! We took a taxi from our home to the airport which is only about 20 minutes from our house and that morning taxi ride was the begininning of remembering Mexico lol.. We've never taken a taxi to the airport before since we have always had somene to take us but this year it didn't work that way so we scheduled a taxi to pick us up at 5 am.. at 5:10, no taxi, so I called and was assured he was on his way and it was the dispatchers fault he was late not the driver, like I cared, lol.. I knew we still had plenty of time, our plane didn't leave till like 7:30 or so and our international airport is pretty small... So the guy (hispanic male) gets to our house and we load up and OMG.... this was way more scary than any taxi ride I have ever had in Mexico lol.. He took off like a BAt out of Hell and we were doing about 80 done the I44, swerving in and out of traffic, then we got to the exit and a car was in front of us and holy crap he started flashing his lights and honking at this person (who was going the speed limit) lol.. and he did this a couple of other times, I just knew some cowboy or gangbanger was going to get out with a gun and kill us long before we got to the airport lol... But we made it, checked in, had our TGIFridays breakfast at the airport and then boarded the plane heading to Mexico!!!

Gotta make them smaller, but figured it out, lol.. made it to Playa obviously. This picture above is the entry way to the Grand Coco Bay AI Resort, yes, a budget resort but we still had a great time!! The lobby is beautiful and the people working at the resort were all wonderful! We were greeted with champagne and smiles.

We were given an ocean front room but with double beds which was very disappointing at the time of check in, especially since I emailed the hotel a month in advance requesting a king size bed. But the room was actually great, and we could have switched to an ocean front king size room two days in and decided to stay where we were.. The beds were probably the most comfortable I've had in a hotel in Playa, amazingly actually lol.. And we did just fine in the double bed.. Guess at home I'm so used to be in bed with the hubs and two dogs our queen feel small lol.. Our room was 2166 and was on the ground floor. We had a patio with access directly to the beach which we absolutely loved! We left a tip everyday and our rooms were cleaned wonderfully and we had towel art almost every day. Our refridge was stocked and kept stocked which was nice. |

Views from our ocean front patio.. The beach on the north end of 5th which is where Grand Coco Bay is, is definately more narrow than down in the playacar area, but still we enjoyed it. And yes, there are boats in the water but I really don't mind that at all, kind of like seeing them actually.. We walked every morning north on the beach about two miles and enjoyed the area very much. Unfortunately it was so incredibly windy the week we were there, the water was pretty rough.. but beautiful!

I absolutely loved this area outside of our room.. we could walk right off our patio to it and it was the perfect shady afternoon sleeping spot, as I"m pretty sure I am doing here lol... It was great.. There was never any fighting for chairs anywhere in the resort, although I will say there are very few umbrellas around the pool so finding a shady spot there if you planned on hanging out all day may have been hard at times. We managed a couple of days to snag umbrella spots at the pool in the afternoon though..

All in all we had a fantastic time! Playa is wonderful as usual! We ate a ton, drank a little and seriously walked our butts off to try to keep the pounds away. Didn't do to bad with it, I gained .5 pounds upon return and my husband had gained 2, for 10 days in Mexico we were pretty happy with that! lol..
We love to eat at Lavagabunda on fifth (closer to the N end ) and ate there twice I believe. We also ate at a healthy place just North of Mega on East side of the road.. can't remember the name of it but holy cow it was wonderful!! And we ate at a little local place as well where we both had fajitas and beer and I think we paid $24 lol.. can't beat t hat!! Next year I think we have decided to give Belize a try since we have now Playa'd about 5 or 6 times.. so if anyone has any ideas for us in Playa, be happy to hear them!! |
