co-rectum

but why bother with it if you are in playa for a month??
so easy to enter and exit with tourist visa, and cheaper

I wouldn't bother getting anything past a FMM until you're actually staying longer than 6 months.

You can "buy" a car without an FM. You can insure a car without your FM. You can't register the car without an FM. You can have somebody else register the car in their name.

You can probably also rent a car for much cheaper if you look around.

I do all my booking from home
Always looking for the best deals
On the car with insurance

I'm wondering if you can go thru the Fideocomiso
To buy the car and get plates
Or it's only used to buy properties

The best deals are found on foot.

You can do almost anything with a fideicomiso, but you wouldn't solve your problem with getting plates. Don't think about it like registering the car and getting the plates makes you the owner, it doesn't. The explanation is long and complex and I don't have time to write it out right now.

And if actual owner of the car is involved in an accident (their fault) - can't the person hit go against the person that the car is registered to?
Can't the person that the car is registered to go to jail until things are satisfactorily resolved?

In short, what Snappy said.

Long answer, the Constitution says that you cannot be incarcerated for civil debt, only as punishment for criminal actions. While they might be arguably civilly liable (if the insurance didn't pay and the driver didn't pay), the owner of the car wouldn't be criminally liable for the actions of the driver, because property damage is a pretty personal crime. It would be really hard for the Ministerio Publico to argue that the owner of the car was in any way responsible criminally, especially for a non-intentional crime (as in the owner is the intellectual author or willing accomplice of the car wreck).

The reason people go to jail for car wrecks is as follows: They are charged with criminal property damage as a result of an accident, which is a crime that must be promoted by the affected party. Really, the affected party just wants their car fixed or the damages paid for, they don't want the person who caused the accident to go to jail. If the person who caused the accident doesn't have any way to pay for the damages, the affected party has the right to prosecute him for the crime of "Daņos" or property damages, which puts the responsible party in the custody of the justice system until he finds means to pay for the damages, at which point the charges are usually dropped.

Daņos
Art. 161 - He who by any means destroys or deteriorates a thing owned by him or someone else, at someone else's detriment, will be imprisoned for six months to six years and fined fifteen to two-hundred forty days of minimum wage.

Even if you could, you shouldn't. The car registration will expire when your immigration status expires, which could be anywhere up to 6 months.

Get your immigration status sorted out first, then buy a car.

This is different from bringing your own car with you, which would certainly be covered by a tourist status.

.
That's the rule for your temporary import permit (US plated vehicle), but I don't think that is true for a registered Mexican vehicle. The registration is good for a year.
