I'm new to this forum. I've been an avid poster at the isla mujeres site. Someone directed me to here from that forum about some tips on driving through Mexico. In Feb. 2013, I'll be making a long trek from North Dakota to Cancun/Isla mujeres via road. I've got all my ducks in a row and have my route planned out.. just looking forward to Feb. '13 ..(that is if the mayan calendar doesn't prove to be the end of us :P lol )

I used to live in South Dakota. Have driven to Playa 5 times. September 2011 was the last time..........the very last time. Getting to dangerous especially if you are driving a nicer car. Shipped one here (actually to Progresso) last month. Cheaper, easier and A HELL OF A LOT SAFER.

If you decide to drive - don't even consider driving through the states of Tamulipas or Veracruz. Been there, done that, and will never do it again.
