THE SASSY DUO in PLAYA - MAHEKAL - JUNE 2-10, 2012
Hi Everyone
My trip report is in blog form...it has lots of pics and videos - mostly of food (mostly what we did was eat and hang on the beach). At the end of each day's post, click "Older Posts" to see the next day. Great trip report!!! I have always loved this resort! I enjoy your animal photos & stories!!! The baby duck video is adorable! I see Gato has the clipped ear...the international sign of a spayed/neutered cat!!! Bravo Mahekal for sterilizing Gato & allowing him to live at the resort!!

Glad you guys like the trip report/blog.
I didn't know that a clipped ear is a sign that a cat has been neutered/spayed. I am glad to hear that. I thought maybe he had been in a fight or something and got injured. I did feel badly because he was definitely much skinnier than the last time we visited in October. Our waiter, Rogelio, told me that he is not fed by the hotel - that he subsists off of whatever the guests give him, so I guess he hasn't been fed as well. I wanted to correct that, but he wasn't around that much this visit. Rogelio told us he's been spotted at some of the other local hotels and restaurants and we did see him while we were in Origenes one evening. I thought of adding the "Amount Spent" to each blog entry this time because I thought it would be helpful to me (and others) when planning a future trip to know what things cost and how much we spent the last time. Of course, the USD amt I list is based on the current exchange rate (which, after ATM fees, etc., I calculated at 13 this visit). I love having the trip reports on the blog because they are all in one place - like an online diary. I love going back later and looking through them again. |

Love, love, love your trip report!! Thanks for sharing the amounts you spent, we always do all-inclusive so I had no idea what things might cost. Btw, each year we walk to Walmart and buy cat food and feed the kitties that live at the resort. I always feel so bad the first evening home, wondering if they are waiting for us like they did every night. Breaks my heart but I can't stand to see them begging for food and figure that a week of cat food is better than not getting it. Sigh...

My wife and I are really enjoying your trip reports. Our first trip to Playa is next month. All the info you provide is very helpful, since we do not know exactly what to expect.
You guys feel like old friends to us, and I would like to tell you why. When we first decided to go to Playa, we looked around and found this site. We were booked at the Mahekal, so i put that into the search engine. Well, of course one of your trip reports came up, along with someone named Johnny Virgil, which is another story. Anyway, we started reading. You talked about Phil having a "Yes" moment on the beach. Ok. We are big fans as well. My lovely bride walked down the aisle (mowed path) 30 years ago to To Be Over from the Relayer album! We also have the words Nous sommes du soleil engraved on our wedding rings. So we share your love of Yes, as well as all Progessive music. Reading on, we find Phil is a drummer in a progressive band. Been listening on the web site, by the way. Intense stuff. Also, saw you were from Philly. Our best friends are from Philly as well. They go to all the prog festivals down your way, although we have yet to make one. Still raising kids, you know. Anyway, hope we bump into you some time in Playa or a prog show. We are up by rochester NY but we do spend time at the Jersey shore in the summer. |

Really enjoyed your blog/trip report! It's a great format and fun to see so many videos. They really transport you to Playa.
We are like you - love to find critters! I have never seen ducks in Playa, who knew? They were adorable. Sorry you didn't see more coatimundi. We have a very large family that live near our condo (see below) and they love to eat tortillas. One of the highlights of every trip is hanging out by the pool in the afternoon waiting for them to come searching for a snack. We've had as many as 25 at one time with those gorgeous tails sticking straight up in the air. Real cutie pies - but huge teeth! |

Thanks again, everyone, for all the comments. I am glad you enjoyed our travel blog.
Need2beach, that's so cool that you resonated with the "Yes" moment from the last report and that you share Phil's love of progressive rock. Where do you like to go at the Jersey shore when you visit? If you are on Facebook, why don't you friend Phil's band. They have a Facebook page and that way we can stay in touch. Lovetheroo - that is amazing that you've had so many coatimundis hanging out with you at the same time. They were shy at Mahekal when we visited. They certainly are very cute. We are a little fanatical with animals. Everywhere we go we are so focused on what animals we will see and we immediately become attached to them. |
