The Palapas on the beach at the Iberostar Tucan provided pretty good shade but you had to get your towel on them early or they wer full up.

The Tucan worked out perfect. The wife stay in the shade between the Beach and the pool. She could see everything. Games where great! Fun place but she is tired of going there. Stop there any time we book Iberostar.

Today the Valentin is back on top. If too quiet we can always go off-property more.

The Royal is much nicer than Gran Porto, and like Shammy said, you get to visit there if you are at the Royal. I found almost no shade at the Royal except in the new area, which felt too secluded.
RIU palace Riviera Maya in Playacar has lots more shade, umbrellas and trees everywhere. We liked it much more than RIU palace Mexico, which was way too quiet and dark in comparison. Keep in mind that RIU Palace Mexico was planning (as of the last time I checked) to close this fall for a total makeover and modernization. For my money, RPRM is ideal for all ages and personalities and offers lots of shady options.

I love Excellence Playa Mujeres and I'm also a total shade person. It's awesome there and so much shade around the pools/beach!

Shade is great at Valentin. Upgraded to Ocean View room for a total of $144 USD. Food good, even at the Steak Restaurant. All the staff knew us by name within 24 HRs. The Taxied us everywhere the first day or so. We learned the shortcuts and the resort isn't too big and is very easy to get around once you learn it.

We visited the RPRM yesterday and there is a ton of shade around the pool and on the beach. The lobby and the grounds make the Royal look like an old Holiday Inn, very elaborate and formal. It was much quieter than the Royal also. I wish we could have visited the RPM to compare. Im not sure we would like the RPRM, maybe too quiet and too ritzy for us. But it is amazingly beautiful!

Our stay at Valentin Was Near Perfect! Only Complaints were the Shows and the GO Crew. They were lazy. The most they did for activities was throw out a volleyball so we could play water volleyball. Generally no music by the pool either. Just Isabell talking Up CoCo Bongo. Shows were the worst I every seen. On par with a Middle School production. Shade was perfect and Plentiful.
