Wife needs shade! The Royal?
The wife needs shade. She should not be in the sun. She use a great sunscreen but can't be too safe. Any palm trees mature there yet? Do the buildings offer any shade? The Cabanas don't appear to be a great provider of shade. Daughter would really enjoy this place but the apparent lack of shade may be a problem. Well there be enough shade?

There aren't many palm trees around the pool, just a few between the pool area and the beach. There's none on the beach. They use sun shields that fold over the tops of the lounge chairs for shade around the pool, and cabanas on the beach. They do provide plenty of shade and there are quite a few of them but you do have to move your chair around a little bit as the sun moves. You can find shade at the quiet pool, the buildings are taller there and do tend to shade areas around that pool and there are a few palm trees too. You can also pull a lounge chair on the grass near the buildings by the main pool to find shade. There's also an elevated level above the swim up bar that has bali beds that provide shade, they are first come, first serve. It'll probably be a bit of a challange for someone who wants NO sun, but that could be the case at other resorts as well. If you sit on the beach, you could purchase an umbrella for use there and then leave it behind. Just a thought. But actually, you'd get the same kind of protection from the cabanas.

If you 100% need shade, I would maybe stay elsewhere. Our group stayed here about a year ago. We also needed shade. We had a hard time finding shade, even with going out to the pool at 7am! A lot of our folks were miserable. The resort does not have umbrellas at all by the pool and those chairs that Shammy is talking about are worthless to protect you from sun. The palm trees (maybe 1-2) didn't give off any shade unless you were standing directly under it. We loved the resort -- but shade was a huge issue for us.
We stayed at the Valentin the prior year and had plenty of shade and the pools were way better. Excellence Playa Mujeres is another resort with lots of little huts and shade. Hope this helps! Quote:

I've heard that the new building and "quiet" pool at the Royal are good for shade. They did take away the umbrellas that they had around the pool a few years ago though, so shade is a little harder to come by in general - other than on your face, thanks to those little shades on top of the chairs.

I just got back from a week at the Royal - and I was dying from the lack of shade. The sun loungers they have cover (at best) only part of your body. I'm a full on shade girl when sitting out by the beach or pool. The beds at the beach were better than the pool chairs (depending on direction of the sun). I really miss the umbrellas they used to have at the Royal. But I still love the resort.

Texas Tim, by far the best resort I've stayed at for shade is the Riu Palace Mexico. HALF of the beach is palm trees...hundreds of feet of it. She will have more shade than she knows what to do with. There are also umbrellas by the pool.

Thanks for the suggestions. The current top runners are El dorado Royale with the downfall the beach. Iberostar Maya with a nice star friends, shows, shade. With downfalls distance to Playa and distance of pools from beach. Gran Porto Royal with average food, beach rocky now, food ok, shows ok. Right in town, more shade than the Royal. We love listen to the music and watching everyone. Will most likely book in the next few days

You do know that if you stay at the Royal, you can use the facilities at the Gran Porto, yes? If you can go over there to find shade, and it's very close, I can't see a reason to pick the Gran Porto (family friendly!) over the Royal (adults only!). In fact, I wouldn't pick the IB* Maya over the El Dorado either, because an adults only resort would be my choice vs. a family friendly one. The beach isn't that bad there. What about the Valentin, Excellence, Secrets?

thanks Shammy,
Hopefully a lot of the kids will be in school or kids plans. We enjoy a few kids. The Valentin seems to be quiet for us. We like the games, music and people watching. We enjoy talking to those on Holiday too. The wife and I are mid 50's daugther in 30's. Wife is afraid we will leave her in the shade at GPR and we party at the Royal. |
