Pet treats - recipes

I have got some time on my hand while I am recouping from recon surgery so I am looking for some easy recipes for pet treats.

I was talking to my neighbor/vet friend who warned me about buying pet treats/food made in China, and I looked at my treats and most of my "healthy" treats were made in China. (ugh). There is also some issue with glycerin being used in treats - this is not good either....

So I am thinking why not make my own (I have a dehydrator to ) - that way I know what is in them.

I have a good recipe using sweet potatoes and canned pumpkin I am going to try out.

I may also make my own pet food to see how that works out - my brother has done this for years (and all of his animals are super healthy).

I am also looking for a list of pet treats and foods made in the USA (not as easy as you think)

My dog flips over the chicken jerky strips we have. We also have duck jerky strips but good God, they smell awful. It is hard to open that bag, it smells like a combination of sweaty feet and flatulence.

I make frozen treats for our "late in life child".

1 32 oz plain yogurt
1 banana
1 Tablespoon of honey
1 Tablespoon of peanut butter

Blend in blender.

Pour into muffin tins, and freeze. I then wrap them, individually, in wax paper, and then put in a large freezer bag.

Healthy and very cheap! And the bonus is he absolutely loves them.

Do you make the chicken jerky yourself ?

That was one of the products I was told to be wary of buying (my dog loves jerky)

I am looking for crunchy chewy type treats as I know that helps their teeth,

No, I just buy it at Costco. It is marked as "organic" on the outside of the bag. It is crunchy and does help with the teeth. May be worth a look if you want that convenience.

You mean letting my cat lick my Greek yogurt off the spoon is not a good treat?

I do the same thing! It's the basic recipe for Frosty Paws, and my dog loves them. The only difference for me is I use Vanilla yogurt and I buy small Dixie Cups to freeze them in.

I love the Dixie Cup idea...hadn't thought of that. And, next time, I will try the Vanilla Yogurt, for a change.

Thanks

Certainly not for your husband if he gets a smooch afterwards.

I downloaded this book onto my Kindle : "Cooking the Three Dog Bakery Way" by Mark Beckloff and Dan Dye. TONS of recipes that my dogs love.

I think this would be easier for dogs than cats. Our cats like ham diced up and they really like diced up smoked meat. When I am cutting meat we have smoked they go crazy at your feet until I give them some. Would be nice to be able to make a dry kibble at home. Never seen recipes for dry home made cat food.

Hi, I work for a vet in zvirginia and we see a couple of young dogs a month that are in kidney failure and they are all, 100%, eating chicken jerky treats. The FDA has even issued warnings regarding these and it is not just China made jerky, it is all chicken jerky.

Please stop feeding these. No one knows why this is happening but it is not worth the risk, there are hundreds of other healthy treats available.

Well thats scary, my dog pops them down like Pez. I appreciate the warning, thank you. Wonder the connection with kidney failure?
