I've never been on a trial, but I did serve on the grand jury for a two week stint. I was so excited because I've always been really interested in the judicial system. It was really awful and depressing. Three quarters of the cases were drug offences, with robberies, bar fights, and domestic violence tossed in the mix.

In Delaware, they use the DMV listings to send you a Jury Duty Notice. When I was still in the military, I was a resident of Virginia stationed in Delaware. I got a notice in the mail saying I had to pull jury duty. I called them and told them I was not a resident of Delaware so could not sit a jury here. This thoroughly confused them as I had a Delaware license! I had to fill out a form showing why I should be relieved from the duty. I thought that would have been entered into a database. But, when I was subsequently stationed to Tokyo, I received another summons. This time though, they indluded the excuse form for me to fill out. I again told my story...BUT, in my typical cynical fashion, they also had a section on the form to discuss mileage (they reimburse travel). So, I put down the mileage from Tokyo to Dover and calculated it out for the two weeks.....at 19,000+/- miles a day round trip for two weeks, they backed off!

I didn't receive another summons until I returned to Delaware and had retired from the AF.
