So here is our story: 15 years ago on a family trip to Cozumel, we took the ferry over to the sleepy little town of playa del Carmen. The vendors literally pulled card tables on the street for lunch. There were only a few shops, bars and restaurants. And words cannot describe the miles of white sandy beaches with no people! A few years later, my husband booked a week a the old Blue Parrot Palapas, then operated by Rick Jones. A little too rustic for my taste, so we checked into the Playacar. But.....we kept going back to the BP for Happy Hour (2 for 1 Dos Equis) and to check out the new condos in the pre-construction phase, right on the beach. A couple nights later, my husband stayed up all night crunching numbers and before we even knew what was happening, we gave Rick a check. 10 years later we're still here, as happy owners at Playa Palms Boutique Hotel. It truly is coming home again every year, to our little piece of paradise in Playa del Carmen.

No special story here. In 2002 Pam came home one day saying she wanted to do a little get away. Her idea was to go to Playa. I think my response was something similar to " I don't want to go to @$%$ Mexico !" As usual, my opinion had no sway. I think we've been to Playa 7 times now. Good thing she ignored me again.

Oh Playa4 , How I wish we had bought when the tent was set up on the beach displaying what would become Playa Palms. We DID stay at the Palapas .I felt like a survivor ! Even now when I walk past I feel like grabbing a perfect stranger to describe what used to be there and what it was like to wake up in the night with sand blowing through the screens all over me .

We loved the old BP palapas! and what about the old Corto Maltes palapas? Wish they were still there....

After staying a week at a AI 10 years ago we spent a day in Playa Del Carmen and fell in love with the beaches and town. Wanting to spend more time in the warm weather than we could afford at a AI, we started looking for a rental. Lucky for us we found the Plantation House, which has become our "2nd home" and the owners our "family". We also started out spending one week, 2 weeks and now since retiring, spend what I think are the 2 coldest months in Michigan, February & March, on the beaches of Playa. Will be back this year after a 30th anniversary trip to Fiji in January. Looking forward to meeting more people that post on this forum!

Plantation House, Wow... what a great spot, and location too.

No wonder you keep going back.

I stayed at the Plantation House on my first solo trip down. I loved it and the owners were great. The only problem is that it is only about 1/2 block from the Dirty Martini. I should not be left to my own devices there!

We discovered the area on a cruise several years ago. We stopped at Cozumel and booked an excursion to the Mayan ruins at Tulum. It was beautiful. It was the hottest I had ever been in my life. (and, we are from Georgia!) It was the best fish taco ever, and the best margarita ever. It was the best everything ever!!!

A couple of years later lovey hubby took me to the Gran Bahia Principe for a week for our anniversary. We took the bus into Playa several times, and enjoyed the entire vacation so much.

A cruise with my parents a couple of years ago went to Cozumel, where we spent a tequila soaked day, and I really missed that we didn't go to the mainland. But, my grandfather was with us, and with his alzheimer's disease, we really wanted to stay close to the boat.

I love reading stories of others who love this area of Mexico! And, I envy those of you retiring there!!! Hopefully we can be neighbors someday!!!

In 2007 I decided I wanted to take a vacation and was looking at the different vacations offered through the Canadian airlines and stumbled upon pics of the ruins of the Yucatan. I instantly wanted to go to this area.

I had originally planned to stay at an AI in Playacar, but after my travelling partners backed out in both 2008 and 2009, I decided to book a trip by myself and ended up at a hotel right on 5th in 2010. I loved it, and was trying to figure out how I could afford to come back the next year before I even got on the plane home.

In 2011 my parents came down with me and loved it, in 2012 I ended up coming down myself after my Mom had to cancel and in 2013 I'll be back with my parents again.

My sister and her husband had been to PdC several times, and had been harassing me and Roger for years to join them. Roger was all about going but I was steadfastly against it. I wanted to go to Canada...to the land of hockey, poutine, and frozen ponds. Why the heck would I bother to go somewhere where you couldn't flush the TP? My son even took French in high school in preparation for Canada. Sand and sun? No thanks.

We argued about it for years, until one night they caught me in a weak (and intoxicated) moment, and I agreed to look at what Playa had to offer. Sis and BIL pulled up the listing for some expensive condo, and I laughed at them. Then they played their trump card, and showed us pics of Luna Blue. I immediately decided that that looked like a cool enough little place to spend a week. Besides, Roger really wanted to go and after putting up with me in school for years I figured he deserved a trip that he wanted. Plus, it would motivate me to finally get a passport, which was my only roadblock to getting to my beloved Canada. I relented and began shopping for bikinis instead of parkas.

We solidified plans, but I honestly didn't know anything about Mexico. I found this board and did a little research for food and stuff. We arrived in Cancun and took the ADO into Playa. Honestly, I wasn't impressed so far. The stress of the timeshare sharks at the airport and the scarey police with big weapons along 307 just weren't doing it for me. We arrived at the ADO station and they were trying to get a taxi (that I was sure was trying to rip us off), and I really started getting snippy. All I could think of was how I should be in Canada. I barked something at my sister, and she grabbed my hand and dragged me to the nearest intersection, pointed down it and said, "Look!"

Oh. My. Just a glimpse of the bluest water and the whitest sand, and I felt like something special had just happened to me.

I quietly went along for the taxi ride to beautiful Luna Blue. I was in awe of how lovely and warmly they welcomed us, and the amazing atmosphere. We climbed the stairs to room #9 and walked in. And there, painted on the wall was a quote by Douglas Adams..."I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I needed to be". . I burst into tears. Hell, I still tear up when I read that quote. Such an amazing and powerful moment in my life....

That was in 2010. This December will be our fifth trip to Playa, all at Luna Blue...to get married. I haven't made it to Canada yet.

Except for a day trip to Tijuana, I'd never spent any time in Mexico. In 2005 I booked a "spur of the moment" trip to Cozumel. During my stay I took the ferry over to PdC for the day and really liked it. Since then my Mex visits have all been to PdC.
