Tipping Property Management Staf

Although we pay our property manager a pretty healthy monthly fee, it is customary to pay a gratuity to the staff who do a lot of the work (e.g pool, maintenance etc).

we have been living at our place in Playa for 3 months and a lot of the staff have been quite helpful.

at one level, i don't think we should pay gratuity since we pay the property manager for all of the provided services, i understand that it's the custom to tip the staff.

if that is the case, can someone give us some guidance at to the appropriate level of gratuity?

thanks

I don't think you NEED to tip them. The day they expect a tip is the day they need to find a new job.

Now this doesn't mean you shouldn't tip them but if you do, remember that there is no turning back. They will always expect a tip therafter.

When we lived in a unit with a gardener, etc., we only tipped if we wanted something particular done, something outside of the regular duties. At Christmas, we tipped with money and homemade cookies.

I'm of two minds about this.

Like the OP, we pay hefty fees for property management. On the other hand, our maid doesn't get paid a ton and works hard.

I agree that once we start that will set an expectation.

It may also make a difference whether one is discussing a condo or an freestanding house. In the former case, maintenance staff is general and the relationship with an individual owner is tenuous, while in the latter they're often specific to that house and the relationship with an owner might be much closer.

I think this would be a good solution. This way they know you appreciate them and doesn't lock you into constant tipping.

Agree that we don't want tipping to become the expected "norm" . The Christmas tipping option is probably a better solution, although I am not so sure about the "cookies"

thanks to everyone for their advice.
