Real Wok Required

Hi - I am a 'Newbie' here and was very careful to 'search' this topic before I asked my first question. But apparently this seems a unique question here..

I have recently moved here from DR and had to leave some of my kitchen stuff behind due to baggage/convenience etc...

I would like to find an authentic Chinese style wok, either carbon steel or cast iron. Preferably flat bottomed.

Any ideas? Not sure of anywhere in Playa, but maybe Cancun???

Basically as an avid amateur cook, I would love to find a source of good quality cookware as I could do with some decent (stainless) pans too.

Can only find non stick Tefal style stuff so far.

Many thanks in advance to any suggestions.

I've been looking for this, too! I seem to remember seeing one that was out of my price range in Cancun, at one of the restaurant supply stores. There is a huge collection of these warehouses/supply stores in Cancun, before you hit downtown. I am blanking on the name of this area, but it's on the west side of the highway and the entrance is a huge peach colored cement structure. I think it's a warehouse/docking type of area where the big import shipment containers unload. Hopefully someone else can chime in with the name of this well-known place.

Thanks Heather, we are due a Cancun run, I'm guessing it's along the main inroad Ave Kulkulkan (?) Near the Europa/Walmart etc stores???? I haven't been around for a couple of years so memory hazy.

I feel your pain, I remember trying to find an electric water jug and could find only one decent one in Sears for $80.

Don't get me started on ironing boards....

There is a restaurant supply store on the highway before Cancun (an after airport turnoff) called something like Pro Epi.

Also you might check at the La Europea store on the highway going into Cancun (same shopping center as Sam's Club).

Have you had a look in the hardware stores along 30th?

Apart from that I think Liverpool in Cancun.

Yes, this is the central warehousing area for Cancun (foods, hotel equip, restaurant supplies, etc), with all sorts of neat stuff deep in there, but I can't think of the name either - it's something like "Centro de Abastacederos", which means (apologies all around for my Spanish) "Wholesalers' Center", or something similar. Coming south towards Playa, it's on the right (west) side of the highway about half-way between "Cancun" (Ave. Bonampak) and the other "Bonam-something" commercial area just before the Airport - it's not the big similar-looking fish wholesaler that you see first - it's on past that, and looks like a pink cement wall with an arch, or series of arches, with the "Centro de Abastacaderos" in big letters on it, set back off the road about 100 feet. Good hunting, and let us know what you find!

I don't know what constitutes a "real" wok, but at least one of the hardware stores on 30th has a big display of cookware hanging out front. Looks just like the steel wok at home. I would guess around Calle 40.

Drove to Cancun today.

The CENTRAL DE ABASTOS CANCUN is located 1/2 mile north of the airport exit on the west side of the highway through the archway.

I still think a better bet to find a pro wok and any other kitchen equipment/supplies would be at PRO EPTA Hotel Collection.
Located approximately 3 1/2 miles north of the airport exit on the west side of the highway. All glass front 2 story free standing building.

Thank you so much, next trip up I will defo check it out - in the meantime the $25 Tefal cheapy from Chedders will suffice. Luckily I have a few mules due for Thanksgiving, they might be surprised what Amazon sends them this year!
