Iberostar Quetzal - 11.1.2012 (T&L)

Day 1

The first day as usual was spent traveling. We were able to jump a ride to Logan International with some friends who were flying out the same day and heading to Florida. So we arrived rather early in the morning approximately 4 hours before our 7 am departure. This was fine with us considering we were eager to get our vacation under way.

Logan to Houston, then off to Cancun and eventually Playacar where we would be spending 7 nights at the Iberostar Quetzal in a ocean front room. We are by no means experienced travelers so the entire trip would be a learning process for us. All four planes were different models some had old VGA TVs some had DirecTv I kinda thought it would be a fun experience, boy was I wrong. It was grueling, flying through time zones, not knowing if the our scheduled arrival time was eastern time or the time in Mexico. When you think your about to arrive and the pilot tells you, about one more hour, it can set off some anxiety. The seats are uncomfortable, and you start to cramp after a couple hours. I will admit the ride home was a bit more pleasant just knowing what to expect and preparing for it.

We finally arrive in Cancun (where we both get green lights) and exchange some dollars for pesos, wiggle our way through the time shares and out to the curb to order up a Corona. We paused for a moment so we could settle down and chug our first beverage of the trip ... ahhhh we made it. We spot our transfer grab a seat and off to Playacar. We were accompanied by two other couples that were staying at two other resorts. Then lastly we arrive at the gate of Playacar and the excitement began. We both let out a scream as soon as we got passed the guard and the driver immediately laughed at us. The drive through Playacar was beautiful and eventually to the lobby area of the Quetzal where we were in awe. Check in was a snap and we got our second floor room as we requested.

50 pesos for the transfer driver, 50 pesos for the bell boy, and we our at our room 2023 where we arrived right around 2pm. It was exactly as we expected beautiful, immaculate, and the view of Cozumel and Mar Caribe was breathtaking. We took a bit to unpack then ventured out to grab a bite and take in all the resort had to offer.

I've been been waiting rather impatiently for this.

Day 2

Day 2

Sand and Surf Day .... Suit Check ... Game faces on ... palapa is in our sights .. towel cards in hand...let the competition begin. Time for the tanning competition to begin T always has to be the tannest. We were dead set on getting the tanning out of the way early and that we did. First day our tans went from a 3 to a 6 on a darkness scale from 1-10. T takes this stuff seriously and her style she becomes one with the chair... me on the other hand I cant sit still for too long so my method is more of the active tanning method. So I tend to wander about and get more of a feel for the resort and and explore while tanning at the same time.

First things first ... Coffee on the balcony and the good luck kiss. We were excited and up with the sun.. sunrise over the Caribe was something her and I just could not pass up. Breakfast at the main buffet and off to the beach to reserve our palapa. Paying a bit more for the ocean front was worth every penny to us..having our room in close proximity to where we would spend 90 percent of our time was priceless.

So far, she winning the tanning competition. I hope you stepped it up.

Kind of hard when she lays there and has you fetch her drinks for her. Oh I know that move all too well.

Day 3

As usual the day started out on the beach Palapa 2, Row 1. Another picture perfect day in Playacar lying on the beach enjoying the view . T in her tanning zone, me playing my role as the bar maid / paparazzi and going over MapChicks Map for our walk to the Fifth.

Today was the day that we would venture out to Starbucks for internet service so she could let all the Facebook peeps know we made it and everything was going well. Then eventually to the fifth for a visit and my first taste of authentic Mexican cuisine.

Our plan was to just get a feeling of what Playa Del Carmen had to offer. Get a feel of the vendors and their hospitality, absorb some of the culture so it would not be to much of such a shock. Hopefully we could eyeball some souvenirs to take home for the fam and last but not least .... EL FOGON. Like all of my well thought out plans this one didn't go as smooth as we hoped.

Both heat beat and feeling the effects of the Rum Punch, Tequila Sunrise, House Wine and Tequila Shots from the night before our fuel levels were a bit low. I thought finding Wal Mart then eventually El Fogon would be rather easy .... NOT! With backpack in hand we wiggled our way down through Playacar stopping briefly at Starbucks for a well needed Double Espresso and some wifi, soaking up the sights of the other AI resorts along the way. We made it past the gate and onto the Fifth. We took the advice of many and kept to the middle of the Ave to avoid falling prey to a sales pitch. The fifth was awesome we had no idea how long it was as we walked, and walked, and walked, and walked. On occasion we stopped to pull out the map to get our bearings straight, but this seemed to upset T, she kept saying OMG we look like tourists. So dinner at El Fogon wasn't looking promising. Then out of no where looking like heaven, there it was Wal Mart just as the sun was about to set. One more quick peek at the map and a five minute walk we were sitting at a table sipping on some beverages while waiting on our food. We relaxed a bit, gobbled down our delicious dinner then back to the ADO terminal to catch a cab back to the resort ........ Mission Accomplished!!!!

Day 4

Day 4

Sun ... Ski ... Sushi ... and a Show. Once again another beautiful in Playacar. By now T and I are beginning to establish a routine, up for sunrise, coffee on the balcony, on the beach by 7am, breakfast at the La Marimba Buffet at 7:30am, Towels at 8am, then back on the beach till sunset....Life Is Good. After a good three days of watching people having fun riding on Jet Skis I figured it was time to take T for a ride so she could get a look of Playacar from the ocean. 50 US and away we went. It was a little choppy that day and I was warned to take it easy so I wouldn't loose my passenger.

This night was also our first night at a Ala Carte we choose the Japanese restaurant, Bonsai. It was another great night, starting with a variety of Sushi, followed by soup then the entree where we both chose to have chicken, beef, shrimp, rice with mixed vegetables. Though I am a big fan of Octopus I have only eaten it one way..which would be cooked Azorean Style. So I passed on it, didn't want to take the chance of an upset tummy. After dinner we waddled over to Le Plaza to watch the show...we got there a bit late and actually missed it this evening but we were able to catch the karaoke show ... which was fine with us considering we both were ready to fall into a food induced coma.

Day 5

Day 5

Pool Day! With a little convincing and lots of 'prying her feet out of the sand' I finally convinced T to spend a day poolside. Well, it was OK, but it also reassured us on how much we prefer the beach over the pool. Up early for breakfast then over to the pool to pick our spot. Found a nice palapa over near the buffet that kinda sat bye itself near a set of stairs that entered into the pool. Figured this would be as nice a spot as any..right?...NOT! By 10am T was already in the shade and cutting me some nasty looks. So there i go scouting for chairs in the sun...found some...and we relocate. Well an hour later ...T is back in the shade.... not good... : ( Basically how the rest of the day went

Well she stuck it out like a good sport....

After an intense morning of musical chairs ... we decided it was time to be branded.

Then later that evening we were off to our second Ala Carte... The Steakhouse in the Palapa La Marimba. We liked it here, casual dress, close to our building. We liked it so much that we canceled our third reservation and booked this one twice. T bonded instantly with the waiter Solomon, funny how one persons personality can just draw you right in. He was personable and spoke English well enough we could hold a decent conversation with him. The food was good, blooming onion, Rib Eye Steak, and sides.

That last pic of you two is great!

Looks like a nice hotel.

I have some friends with two boys ages 12 and 14 who are looking for an AI in the MR and that one is supposed to be good for kids, right? Lots of wildlife on site?

I wish i was a resource for you ... It would be difficult to answer for me considering this was my first AI experience and have nothing to compare it to. There was some activities for kids ... I know this because one evening they did pass out awards ... for stuff like darts and pellet guns. There is also a toddler pool and a playground. I didnt notice, and i dont think they offer a water park .. like some other resorts have.

To answer your second question YES plenty of wildlife.

Thanks for the compliment ....
