Bruce and Pam Drive Northern California(mostly photos)

We recently did a short trip to Lake Tahoe, San Francisco and Monterey. Our anniversary was coming up and Pam thought the trip would be nice. We booked it just two weeks prior to leaving.

Planning a trip to the mountains at the end of October is a bit of a gamble since the weather is unpredictable. The weekend prior to leaving the forcast for Lake Tahoe was for snow and cold. We talked about not going to Tahoe if the weather was really bad, but as the day to leave approached the snow ended and the forecast was for cool but sunny weather.

We arrived in San Francisco at 9:30 am, got our rental car and started the 200 mile drive to South Lake Tahoe. It was a beautiful day, so we took our time and stopped along the way to enjoy the scenery and to have lunch.

We arrived at our destination mid afternoon. We stayed at Harrah's in South Lake Tahoe. We stayed there years ago when we got married. Nice hotel, and Pam liked the room because it had two very large bathrooms, and I liked the view of the lake.

We relaxed for a little bit, changed clothes and headed out for a drive.
We heased toward Emerald Bay so we could get there and back before the roads started to refreeze.

The photos below were taken at Emerald Bay. The second one was taken while standing on the exact spot were were married. After this we returned to the hotel for some dinner and relaxation after a long travel day. I think I passed out at about 10:00.

Pam usually sleeps in while on vacation while I head out looking for some photos. I left the room about 8:00, which is later than I would have liked but I was tired and not in a hurry. I found a spot that provided some photo opportunities. It was about 16 degrees outside, which provided a nice look to the lake. I checked out a couple other spots until Pam called to say she was close to being ready for our day.

Thanks Jacko! Gorgeous is one of many superlatives that could be used to describe the Lake Tahoe area.

Thanks Bonnie!

After a late breakfast we were off to check out the scenery. We just decided to drive with no specific destination, just stopping as we felt like it. It had warmed nicely to the low 50's and was a perfect day.

It had been a really great day. In the evening we went out for a nice dinner at Fresh Ketch located at the marina. We had some great tasting blackened swordfish and orange ruffy. After dinner we just went back to the hotel to relax. Tomorrow we head back to San Francisco.

We were going to check out at about 11:00, so I wanted to get some more photos in the morning. I knew if I got out very early the lake could look interesting. I left the hotel while it was still dark and drove to a couple spots I had been to the day before. I had wanted to head up higher into the mountains but I was warned against doing that because the roads would be icy from the melting snow. I was out for a few hours until it was time to get some breakfast and checkout. Next stop, San Francisco.

Great photos. Had been planning this trip for next summer withmy family. Was considering changing gears and going to Italy. Now I am thoroughly confused.

Thanks flyingpig11. I don't think you could go wrong with either choice. I saw your thead below asking about northern California. You were given so great advice there. I would not be one to attempt to steer you in either direction, but will say this trio of destinations are hard to beat in the U.S. for beauty and culture.

Sorry about the size of the photos. I just saw them on another moniter and they are huge. I have a huge screen at home and could not tell they were too big. Next ones will be smaller.

Our hotel of choice in San Francisco was booked so we chose to stay in Emeryville which is right across the Bay Bridge, and near Berkeley. We stayed in a Courtyard by Marriott, which turned out to be a very nice hotel, and it was right next door to a Trader Joe's, which made Pam happy. We didn't have any plans to do anything special in San Francisco since we've been there quite a few times. On the night we arrived all we did was go to Muir Beach for a walk, then went up to one of our favorite spots to look over the city and Golden Gate Bridge. After that we grabbed a late dinner and called it a night.
