Rain does not wash away the sargassum. The tides do. We'll see what happens with this front moving in.

It's in Cancun too but not nearly as bad as what I've seen south of here. It doesn't even look that much out of the ordinary actually.

I'm happy to report that rain or no rain, seaweed* or no seaweed, the stench is now completely localized to the vicinity of known bad actors - The Royal and its twin brother, a couple of buildings that let sewage flow to the street, but no sign of the previous system wide failures. We'll see how it is with heavier rain.

Of course this means the old stories about mangroves, seaweed, etc. causing the smell are pure ryberg-speak.

* even at the magnificent location just south of El Taj where there's a drain sump and palm trees ready to collapse into it, all covered with layers and layers of seaweed - no stench.

Which would explain why we smelled it so many times while staying at the Royal. Ugh 😱

The seaweed problem will stop when the prevailing wind directions changes. Until then, the seaweed will continue to flow into the Caribbean Sea and eventually wash up on Mexico's East shoreline.

"Sargassum seaweed comes from the North Atlantic area called the Sargasso Sea. In the summer, currents and wind conditions cause the growth to break free and drift through the Caribbean and into the Gulf of Mexico It stops when the winds change in the fall,"

not true, the current moves northward

Let's hope wind direction will change fast then

He's still obsessed with me after all this time.

It's kinda cute.

P.S. No mention of these positive and limited results indicating that all the old doom-and-gloom talk about the authorities being entirely corrupt and inept and incapable of resolving any issues whatsoever being PP-speak?

1. I'm happy something's getting done (we'll see how it holds through some rain and new condos)

2. I wasn't the one lying about it before. You were.

p.s. I thought about posting photos of the near-black seaweed soup in front of your property the other day, but couldn't be bothered.

What a load! The stink is from Cannibal Royal all the way to Wah Wah and it is rotting Seaweed. There may well be bad actors but the stink that you can smell at times several blocks inland is rotting seaweed.

A load you say?
I just knew there was a simple explanation for this multi-year long debate.

Yah, pun intended!
I don't doubt that there are other "stinks" that have been issues over the years( we've been coming for 8) but the current stink, that has frankly kept us from the beach much of the last three months, is seaweed. And it isn't particularly localized to the "bad actors" area.
I used to be a deckhand in another life and the smell of seaweed is one I know and have never been able to stomach very well.
