if you have the smell in your bathroom, covering the shower drain and/or floor drain will usually fix that (as has been mentioned above)

the more permanent fix is to remove and clean the traps, which is a grody job

ps/ this will not work for the ocean

One of the explanations for the increased seaweed levels in recent years in this area could be excess raw sewage, actually...

But it sounds to me that some people believe that this is being done intentionally. I guess I am naive, but its hard for me to believe that with all the eco, green, save the whale org's and all the satelite imaging, spying, and jacques cousteau's that if something such as Illegal, immoral and intentional dumping 24/7 365, that it could be possible to keep it secret and no one would know anything about it.
So I will continue to belive it's seaweed.

What's being done intentionally is to lie about it - see the article linked to upthread where officials appear to be denying the existence of a problem and claiming (falsely) that labs did not find any contamination.

What's also being done intentionally is to not invest sufficiently in infrastructure and monitoring. (although there's still more investment than in much of Mexico)

This isn't a problem particular to PDC or Mexico - I remember it was well known that Eilat - a resort town by the Red Sea would always smell terribly after it rained (fortunately, it doesn't rain much down there) and when, more recently, the main pipe throwing sewage out into the Mediterranean cracked close to the shore of Tel-Aviv and then it was suddenly discovered what was believed to be treated sewage wasn't that treated after all...

I've been going to Playa regularly for the past six years, and what started as a small problem mostly localized around 46th St. is now a big problem. Denying it won't make it go away.

eta: of course, you can continue to believe it's seaweed if that works for you. I don't think some e.coli in the water is going to kill you anyway.

where do you live in Canada? We do it here too. Mexico doing it, with their little regulation in comparison, surprises you?

@beam-eye ... Objection Your Honour! You put words in my mouth I did not say
" recommendation to return to our disease-ridden past in hopes of boosting our resistance to diseas"

It maybe an observation, and not fact, thatexaggerated hygienecontributes to growing instances of asthma, skin irritation, allergic reactions to the tamest nutritional items such as peanuts, but fact is that bacteria outnumber our own cells to the tune of 10:1...so considering the number of cells in our bodies does a few million extra do any harm to us??? ;-)

{... with these Funthomas is running for cover and peeking from behind the couch in anticipaishun of the salvo of e-coli dipped arrows from beam-eye ...}

some people don't notice the odor
and it isn't there all the time

and people are concerned and trying to locate the source
debate away, facts are always better

Seaweed

Since seaweed has been talked about in this forum, how is it these days north of the ferry pier? Was there this past May and it seemed to accumulate in bunches everyday, something I hadn't seen the prior two years I visited. Is the seaweed still floating ashore with regularity every morning in mass quantity? Thanks.
