Around the Roo in 16 Days- Caramba's 2012 Trip Report

Friday, November 30

I was used to Caramba nestling into my suitcase as I was trying to pack. I wasn’t prepared for this, though. I raced home from work to empty the carefully folded contents of my laundry basket into my suitcase when the unmistakable odor of cat piss nearly knocked me out. Argghh! Damn cat. 11th hour laundry wasn’t in my plans tonight, but I threw the pile into the washer, then dryer, and told Brian and our house sitter friend Locke we were running out to the Panda Wok for a quick bite and a nerve settling mai tai. Might as well get this party started.

3:00 in the morning comes awfully fast when you go to bed past midnight, but that’s par for the course whenever we have an early flight out of Logan. It will be worth it to arrive in Mexico shortly after 10 a.m.

Our trusty driver Misty was right on schedule and so were Harris and Paul. Their dog Patsy would come to stay with Ixchel and Sirena in another couple of days. Caramba smugly licked her paws, and we were off.

Fast forward to our check in at Playa Palms.

We reserved just one night in an oceanview room, but were upgraded to oceanfront suite # 112. It wasn’t ready yet, though, so we went next door to Indigo Beach Club, still in our jeans, and ordered our first margaritas under a shady tree. We’d touched base with Susie Q to tell her we’d arrived and had the camera that she’d had sent to us the past week to mule down. I hate being without a camera, so we were happy to oblige. She and Kent soon arrived and we had a nice time catching up. It had been some time since we’d seen Susie, and I thought Kent was most charming.

We checked on the room, which was now ready.

Cool… and there’s a downstairs with two more beds. Family suite, I guess. Although Brian said it was kind of creepy, like a dungeon or something, and made some joke about lucha libres wrestling in the dungeon like in some bad movie. *Shudder.*

We changed and headed back over to Indigo to have a little lunch. Harris (Tallyho) and Paul had just settled into Plantation House and our friend Linda into her Playa Palms room for the week, and they joined us to chill over more drinks and some delicious seafood.

Paul & Harris

Later we regrouped at our place and walked down the beach to Bad Boys, where Brent Parkin was playing. We also found Steve (snappysammy), Jimontheriver, his lovely wife Donna, and AbsoluteAl there as well.
We hung out for a round of margaritas and some great tunes until our stomachs grumbled. La Tarraya was an obvious choice and just as good as we all remembered. Mmmm, fish filet with garlic sauce, some of that killer salsa verde and killer margaritas…. We felt like we were home. Brian’s fish with cilantro sauce was muy bueno, too.

After dinner Harris and Paul went off to the bus station to see if their friend Karen had arrived from Seattle. We walked with Linda past the Dirty Martini, where luckily there were no familiar faces. We were now way overtired after 2 hours’ sleep, and headed back to Playa Palms to collapse. We slept like logs, despite the faint, trancy-chimey ‘Bing Bing Bing, Bing Bing Bing’ still audible from the club next door til 4 a.m., and despite the disturbing vision of lucha libres wrestling downstairs creeping into my foggy, sleep deprived brain.

I almost forgot that after La Tarraya we wandered into Wah Wah Beach Bar. What a place, wow!! It's huge! Genius Kong was playing and we found Sue and Rick at the bar (and ran into Steve again). It was great to see those guys, and Sue gave me a heads up about the pinata hanging over Mike Grabow's head. In a little while the pinata lowered and he swung at it and it broke open, scattering candy everywhere. Sue had told me to check out the 'suckers' to see if any had a sticker on them for a free margarita. It was really funny to run around checking candy for stickers, and I was successful. And smart, because I let Brian have the margarita. At that point, I clearly did not need another drink.

I am quite excited for this trip report!!!

I need to price that room. Looks like it would be perfect for us when we come down in August since the kids will be with us for half the week.

Good question- the oceanview room we'd reserved was $119, I think. It would be great with kids... and you can't get any closer to the beach! Small plunge pool right outside the door, too.

Saturday, December 1st

I jumped up like clockwork at sunrise, took a couple of pictures then fell back asleep for a little while.

Brilliant sunshine poked through the curtains and I made coffee, then prodded Brian to come outside and have a cup under the sea grape tree. Didn’t want to rouse Linda too early- she was probably still asleep a few doors down.

Just then she came strolling around the corner from Indigo Beach Club (continental breakfast there is included when staying at Playa Palms). Harris and Paul showed up and we walked over with them, opting to shell out a few extra pesos to take part in the impressive looking buffet. The fresh and dried fruit, nuts, yogurt, granola and pastries stretched the full length of the bar and we could also order from the menu, including chilaquiles, my favorite, and chicken enchiladas, which became a breakfast staple for Brian for the remainder of our trip. Add a little fresh squeezed orange juice and we felt like kings.

After breakfast we made tentative plans to meet the others at the PAR (Playa Animal Rescue) dog wash and spa day later on. First we had to check in to Fisherman’s Village, where we’d be staying for the upcoming week. A week from today we’d head south on a big adventure.

We packed up the Fiat Panda and headed over, hoping our early arrival would net us the same end unit we’ve enjoyed a couple of previous years . Sadly that was taken, but we were given another nice studio next door.

We hurried to settle in a little and booked it up to the new shelter about one, where we were just a tad late to help with the dog wash but still in time to have a tour, a cold beer and meet all the pups. We found Paul and Harris busy taking lots of photos, and Linda in the puppy pen getting slobbered with kisses. It was great to finally see the shelter- so impressive what these folks have accomplished here- and the tireless effort put forth by Jan, Erik, Sue, Richard, Barry and Phyllis- and all the other volunteers and supporters. They should be very proud.

Linda in the puppy pen

Before we left we were able to unload the Keurig coffeemaker we’d brought down for Sue and Richard who had caught us right before we left with a coffeemaker emergency, and we dropped off the soft sided crates we’d had hoped to use for a friend who had been on the fence about adopting a couple of puppies. Thankfully they would be put to good use that very next weekend for a couple of lucky pups being flown to new homes in the states.
When we left we cut down CTM to Canibal Royal for a little ceviche on the beach- it was fine, as usual, but we found it too crowded on a Saturday afternoon for our tastes and made a mental note to visit on a weekday next time.

We made the obligatory stop at Mega for booze and coconut yogurt and so on, then went back to our place for a bit. We were meeting Steve at Bad Boys for a drink later on, and then the rest of the crew at Babe’s for mojitos.

After lingering a half hour at Babe’s that evening, the rest were a no show, and our streetside table was being lustily eyed by some hungry, pacing people.

So we moved to Ula Gula at the corner of calle 10 and 5th and bellied up to the bar to keep an eye out for our errant friends. Funny how you can pass by a place a million times over the years and never stop, only to finally do so and have the most marvelous time.

Eventually the rest of the crew joined us, having been waylaid at the Dirty Martini. It was a fun place- we laughed so hard there tears were streaming down my face by the time we left. And we’d find ourselves stopping back off and on throughout the week. Some of us more than others (Lindaaaa!)…. Julio was just tooo cute. In fact he and Oscar were fine bartenders, both. They poured a good drink, too.

Eventually someone thought we ought to eat and we ended up having a late bite at Carboncitos- my favorite tacos al pastor and pumpkin seed salsa, mmmm!

About 11 we headed home before I turned into a pumpkin myself. We were tired, and thinking maybe tomorrow should be our first little road trip.
